Half A Soul review

Half a Soul is one of those quietly magical stories that sneaks up on you. Set in a Regency world brushed with faerie magic, it follows a heroine who has lost part of her soul and with it, the ability to feel emotions the way others do. What I loved most is how gentle this book. It’s soft, thoughtful, and deeply human, with her sass shining through.

The romance is slow, tender, and built on understanding rather than grand gestures. I especially appreciated that the story never treats the heroine as something to be “fixed.” Instead, it centers on acceptance, dignity, and finding your place in a world that doesn’t quite know what to do with you. If you’re in the mood for a cozy historical fantasy with heart, warmth, and quiet depth, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

... Read moreAs someone who adores historical fantasy with a touch of magic, 'Half a Soul' by Olivia Atwater truly delivered! It's one of those rare books that feels like a warm hug, perfectly balancing its whimsical elements with deeply human themes. The original review touched on its gentleness and acceptance, but there's so much more to unpack in this enchanting tale. Let's talk about Theodora Ettings, our remarkable protagonist, the woman with half a soul. The OCR mentioned her condition—a lack of fear or embarrassment due to a faerie curse. This isn't just a quirky plot device; it's central to her character development. Imagine navigating the strictures of Regency England without the usual social anxieties! It leads to hilariously awkward situations and accidental scandals, making Dora a refreshing and utterly endearing character. She's not trying to be defiant; she simply is herself, and watching her journey of self-discovery, often against the backdrop of societal expectations, is truly captivating. Her blunt honesty, born from her condition, often cuts through the pretense of high society, making for some truly memorable interactions. The blend of Regency England and faerie magic is seamlessly executed. The OCR highlighted that it's difficult to find a husband with half a soul, and that's precisely the delightful premise. The fae aren't just background; they are integral to the plot, influencing Dora's life in profound ways. When the strange yet captivating Lord Sorcier, Elias Wilder, enters the scene, Dora is drawn into a world of peculiar faerie affairs. This isn't a dark, gritty fantasy; it's a shimmering, whimsical world where faeries can be mischievous and meddlesome, yet also hold keys to understanding Dora's own condition. The magic feels organic to the setting, enhancing the historical atmosphere rather than detracting from it. And the romance! If you're a fan of a genuine 'slow burn' then you're in for a treat. The original review praised its tenderness, and I couldn't agree more. The connection between Dora and Elias Wilder isn't built on grand, sweeping gestures, but on quiet understanding and mutual respect. Elias sees Dora for who she truly is, half-soul and all, and his empathy, as hinted in the OCR quote, is truly moving. Their interactions are filled with witty banter and growing affection, making their emotional journey incredibly satisfying. It's a romance that feels earned, developing naturally as they navigate dangers and secrets together, creating a beautiful 'found family' dynamic with other characters along the way, as mentioned in the OCR. The book description's comparison to 'Bridgerton meets Howl's Moving Castle' is spot-on – you get the historical charm and social commentary alongside the fantastical elements and a deeply romantic core. Ultimately, 'Half a Soul' is more than just a historical fantasy romance; it's a profound story about acceptance, dignity, and finding your place in a world that might not quite understand you. It celebrates being different and shows that true love means embracing every part of a person, even the parts that might seem incomplete. If you're looking for a book that will leave you feeling warm, hopeful, and utterly charmed, I wholeheartedly recommend diving into Olivia Atwater's magical version of Regency England.
