Making Medicinal Tea

Making your herbal tea properly 101! Did you know this?? I used to just steep all my teas so hopefully this can help someone. The way you prepare your tea is just as important as the plants vou choose. So when making herbal tea for medicinal benefits make sure you look into how to properly prepare it, after some time it will be second nature.

You can also prepare one plant two different ways to pull out different active constituents and therefore benefits too! I can cover that more in another video.

I did get a huge response on other socials and a lot of questions, so I have 2 follow up videos with FAQ that are ready to post next. if you have any questions drop them below!

... Read moreWhen it comes to making medicinal tea, preparation truly influences its effectiveness. From my experience experimenting with different herbs, I’ve learned that not all plants respond the same way to heat or steeping time, and this affects the potency of the tea’s benefits. For delicate leaves and flowers like chamomile, peppermint, and lemon balm, a gentle infusion with hot water is ideal. This method preserves their volatile oils, which contribute to calming effects and digestive support. I usually steep these for about 5 to 10 minutes, avoiding boiling water which can destroy sensitive compounds. On the other hand, roots and barks such as dandelion root, ginger root, and licorice root need a longer decoction—simmering in water to extract the tougher, denser constituents like polysaccharides and alkaloids. I’ve found simmering for 20 to 30 minutes works well to release maximum benefits without overcooking the herbs. Cold extraction is another technique I’ve tried for minerals and gentle flavors, especially with nettle leaf, oatstraw, and marshmallow root. This method preserves delicate nutrients and avoids loss of efficacy that hot water can cause. For cold infusions, I typically let the herbs steep in cold water for several hours or overnight. An interesting tip I discovered is using one plant in multiple preparation ways to release different active compounds. For example, sometimes I’ll make a hot infusion with lemon balm for its aromatic calming oils and a cold extract for a gentler effect. Understanding these preparation techniques transformed how I approach herbal tea making. It’s not just about choosing the right plants but also how you prepare them to harness their full medicinal power. To anyone starting out, I recommend experimenting with these methods and adjusting steep times and temperatures to what feels right for your health needs. Overall, taking the time to learn proper preparation methods can make your medicinal teas more effective and enjoyable. Feel free to ask any questions as this process often requires some trial and error to perfect based on individual herbs and desired benefits.
