My low porosity hair didn’t grow overnight. What changed was my consistency.

A few things that have helped me retain length over the years:

✨ Keeping my scalp clean

✨ Staying consistent with deep conditioning

✨ Moisturizing my hair regularly

✨ Protecting my ends

✨ Being patient and trusting the process

I also learned that what works for one person may not work for another. My routine includes regular trims, occasional heat, herbal treatments, protective styles, and listening to what my hair needs in each season.

The biggest lesson? Hair growth and length retention are two different things. Most hair is growing…it’s keeping the length that’s the challenge.

This is what has worked for my low porosity, dense natural hair. 🌱

Save this for your next wash day and follow for more natural hair tips, braids, and healthy hair content.

... Read moreGrowing low porosity hair can be a rewarding yet challenging journey. From my experience, one of the most important factors that contributed to length retention was staying consistent with a hair care routine tailored specifically for low porosity hair. Because the hair cuticle is tightly closed in low porosity hair, moisture has a hard time penetrating. This means that regular deep conditioning treatments become essential to help hydrate the strands effectively. I also found that using lightweight moisturizers and sealing that moisture in with oils helped prevent dryness without weighing my hair down. Keeping the scalp clean is crucial as buildup can block hair follicles and inhibit growth. I made it a habit to massage my scalp gently during washes to stimulate blood flow and encourage healthy growth. Another essential step was protecting my hair ends, which are the oldest and most fragile parts of the hair strand. I used protective styles such as braids or twists to reduce manipulation and minimize breakage. Regular trims helped remove split ends and kept my hair looking healthy. It’s important to listen to your hair’s needs as they can change with the seasons. For example, during drier months, I increased moisturizing frequency and incorporated herbal rinses to soothe and strengthen my scalp. Patience was the biggest lesson I learned; hair growth is mostly invisible since it happens at the follicle level. The real challenge is length retention — preventing breakage so your hair can grow longer over time. Trusting the process and being consistent with your routine can bring impressive results over months and years. If you’re navigating the world of low porosity hair, remember that what works for others may need tweaking for your unique hair type. Experiment, stay committed, and celebrate small victories. With time, you’ll see your hair grow healthier, stronger, and longer.
