OR New Grad Job Advice

I know firsthand how stressful it can be to get a job out of nursing college. The pressure of getting the best job, on the best floor, at the best hospital can be extremely overwhelming! People also don't talk about what to do if you made the wrong decision when choosing your first job out of nursing school. I'm here to tell you, if you don't like your nursing job, DON'T stay! It is not worth your mental and physical well-being. I quit my bedside nursing job after 4 months and switched to the OR and have never been more happy.

Key characteristics for success in the OR as a nurse include being detail-oriented, calm under pressure, and having strong communication skills to work well with surgeons and other medical staff. Working alongside surgeons is incredibly fun because you’re part of a close-knit team. However, it can be intimidating, and you need to build up a thick skin to succeed. The OR is extremely high stress, which can yield many different behaviors and personalities. If you like adrenaline rush and high intense situations, then you will fit right in!

Additionally, working during the day with a regular schedule means you have a much better work-life balance, and personally, my health has improved because I no longer have to deal with night shifts or unpredictable hours. The healthier you are the better you can take care of your patients!! #lemon8partner #lemon8challenge #nurse #healthcare

... Read moreStarting your nursing career in the Operating Room (OR) can be both exhilarating and daunting. New grad nurses often feel immense pressure to perform and adapt quickly. Key strategies for success include developing a strong support system among your peers, seeking mentorship from experienced nurses, and engaging in continuous professional development. It's crucial to embrace learning opportunities and ask questions, as the OR requires precise skills, from assisting in surgeries to managing equipment. Understanding the dynamics of working with surgeons is essential; teamwork and clear communication can enhance patient outcomes and create a more harmonious workplace. Additionally, exploring various specialties within the OR can help you find your niche—whether it’s orthopedic, cardiac, plastic, or general surgery. Being adaptable and open to different experiences will enrich your understanding and passion for your nursing career. Remember that self-care is vital in such a high-stress environment. Prioritize your health and well-being to provide the best care for your patients. With determination and support, you can excel in your nursing journey and contribute significantly to your medical team.
