Learning Color Grading and Cinematography

“I’M NOT A VIDEOGRAPHER”. So I’m working on Color grading for my future content. I can say this is an EXTREMELY HUMBLING process! Practicing cinematography for my self and my content. I plan on bring that QUALITY. So I really have to trust the process. The new software (Davinci Resolve) I use is definitely for pros lol. I have A LOT TO LEARN! I AM READY though! #cinematography #colorgrading #davinciresolve #sonyzve1 #slog #colorcorrection #explorepage #explore

... Read moreIt's true, when I said 'I'M NOT A VIDEOGRAPHER,' I meant it! But that doesn't stop me from wanting my videos to look incredible, almost like they belong on the big screen. My journey into COLOR GRADE and cinematography has been an eye-opener, revealing just how much goes into achieving those coveted cinematic looks that truly tell a story. It’s certainly a humbling process, but also incredibly rewarding. One of the first things I learned, and something the original post touches on, is the absolute necessity of shooting in a flat profile like S-LOG. Before I understood this, I'd try to grade footage that already had baked-in contrast and color, and it felt like pulling teeth. Shooting in S-LOG, or any log profile, gives you so much more dynamic range and color information to work with. It's like starting with a blank canvas instead of one that's already half-painted. This raw, flexible footage is the foundation for any serious cinematic color grading. When I hear 'cinematic color grading examples,' I used to think it was just about making something dark and moody. But I’ve discovered it’s so much more nuanced. Cinematic grading is about enhancing the mood, guiding the viewer's eye, and creating a consistent visual language. For instance, a warm, golden hour look can evoke nostalgia or romance, while cool blues and greens might suggest mystery or isolation. It’s about understanding color theory – how complementary colors pop, or how analogous colors create harmony. I'm constantly experimenting in Davinci Resolve, pushing and pulling colors, adjusting shadows and highlights to sculpt the light and evoke emotion. Speaking of tools, sometimes you need a starting point, especially when you're still learning. That's where Look Up Tables (LUTs) come in handy. I've been exploring different LUTs to see how they instantly transform footage. While they're not a one-click fix-all, they can be fantastic for quickly achieving a certain aesthetic or for speeding up your workflow. I recently came across discussions about 'freshluts by simplified,' and I've been curious to try them out. From what I gather, they offer a range of cinematic looks that can give you a professional starting point, which you can then customize to perfectly fit your specific scene and vision. It's about finding that balance between using a pre-made look and making it truly your own. My goal is to bring that professional quality to my content, and it takes time, practice, and a lot of patience. From understanding the technicalities of S-LOG footage to creatively manipulating colors in Davinci Resolve, every step is a learning curve. I'm still very much in the trenches, practicing cinematography movements and refining my color grading skills. Every video is an opportunity to try new techniques and learn from mistakes. The journey is long, but the prospect of creating truly compelling visuals keeps me motivated. If you're also on this path, remember: trust the process, keep experimenting, and don't be afraid to dive deep into the world of color!
