how walking can help manage your ADHD

This year, walking has become one of my favorite ways to help support both my son and I with our ADHD.

Not only are you getting in more movement, but you’re increasing your vitamin d levels, improving your sleep quality, and exposing yourself to more “green time,” which has been proven to help calm the ADHD brain. #lemon8partner #adhdcommunity #adhdlifehacks

... Read moreYou know, for years, managing my ADHD felt like a constant uphill battle, especially when it came to focus and getting a good night's sleep. But this past year, I stumbled upon a truly game-changing strategy: the simple act of taking a daily walk. What started as just a way to get some fresh air has blossomed into a cornerstone of how my son and I navigate our ADHD, and I'm so excited to share more of what I've learned! It's more than just 'getting steps in.' When I talk about an 'ADHD walk,' I'm thinking about intentional time outdoors, especially embracing sunlight exposure and immersing ourselves in nature, or what I like to call 'green time.' The science behind it is fascinating: that natural light helps regulate our circadian rhythms, which is crucial for ADHD brains that often struggle with sleep initiation and quality. I've personally noticed a significant improvement in my sleep since making these walks a habit. After a good walk, I feel genuinely tired, but in a refreshing way, and falling asleep just feels easier. And let's talk about the brain. The OCR text really hit home for me when it mentioned that walking can also help your brain release dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin! These neurotransmitters are like the command center for focus, mood, and motivation – all things many of us with ADHD often find challenging. I've found that even a 20-minute walk can help clear the mental fog and give me a much-needed boost in concentration for tasks later in the day. It's like my brain gets a gentle reset button pushed. Beyond the neurochemistry, there's the sheer power of being in nature. Moving our bodies in a natural setting provides a different kind of sensory input than being indoors or in a bustling city. The gentle sounds, the fresh air, the visual stimuli of trees and open spaces – it all works together to calm the overstimulated ADHD brain. For my son, it’s often the best way to release pent-up energy, especially after a long day at school. He comes back calmer, more regulated, and much more receptive to winding down. Making an 'ADHD walk' a consistent practice can be tricky with executive dysfunction, I know. Here’s how I’ve made it work for us: Start Small: Don't aim for an hour right away. Even 10-15 minutes can make a difference. The goal is consistency, not intensity. Make it a Ritual: We try to go around the same time each day, like right after breakfast or before dinner. This 'habit stacking' helps it become automatic. Embrace the Outdoors: Seek out parks, quiet streets with trees, or even just your backyard. The more 'green time,' the better. If you can walk barefoot on a sandy beach towards the ocean like in the image, even better for grounding! Mindful Movement: Instead of just rushing through, try to engage your senses. Notice the breeze, the sounds of birds, the feeling of your feet on the ground. This can be a mini-meditation in itself. Listen to Your Body: Some days, a brisk pace feels right; other days, a slow wander is exactly what’s needed. The key is to move in a way that feels good for you. Integrating these ADHD exercise benefits into our daily lives has been transformative. It’s a simple, accessible tool that truly supports managing the unique challenges of ADHD, helping us achieve better focus, improved mood, and a more peaceful daily rhythm. Give it a try – your brain (and body!) will thank you!
