Are you asking for too much?

Are you really asking for too much? Or do they just have nothing to give?

In my experience, realizing the difference between legitimate needs and unreasonable demands is crucial for mental health and healthy relationships. Often, when we ask for support or understanding, and get labeled as 'too needy,' it's more about the other person’s limitations than our own desires. It’s vital to recognize that everyone has different capacities to give in relationships, whether emotional, time, or attention-wise. Being clear about what you need while respecting your boundaries helps differentiate healthy requests from overextending yourself. I’ve learned that it’s okay to set limits on how much you give and to expect the same care in return without feeling guilty. When people say, “You’re asking for too much,” it’s worth reflecting on whether your requests are reasonable or if the other party is simply unwilling or unable to meet them. Also, understanding terms like 'real life' and 'valid meaning' (betekenis) can help ground your expectations in reality—not in idealized or unhealthy dynamics. This clarity helps you release the burden of blame or apology when you’re simply advocating for your needs. Taking the journey from a people-pleaser mindset to one of self-respect and healing can be empowering. Remember, your needs are valid, and seeking honest relationships where giving and receiving are balanced is a key to emotional wellbeing.
