tips for asking for an ✨extension✨

As someone that answers at least an email a week about extensions, here are some of my tips:

If the syllabus clearly says no, do not ask. It comes off as if you do not respect the clear rules in most cases. Asking for extra credit is the better way to make up the points in a way that doesn't come off like you are wanting special rules.

Do not tell your life story. It is okay if you feel comfortable explaining your situation, especially if extenuating circumstances lead to you needing more time, but do not harp on explaining yourself. Instead focus on the assignment and your desire to turn it in in proper form.

Be clear what you are asking for. This is also better for you getting your answer as soon as possible to help you plan accordingly.

... Read moreAsking for an extension can often be daunting for students, but knowing how to approach it can significantly improve your chances of a favorable outcome. Here are some key strategies: 1. **Understand Your Syllabus**: Before making an extension request, carefully review your syllabus. If your professor has a strict no-extension policy, it's best not to ask. This can show respect for established guidelines and may even strengthen your relationship with your instructor. 2. **Consider Extra Credit Options**: If extensions are prohibited, consider inquiring about extra credit opportunities. This proactive approach can demonstrate your commitment to improving your grades without appearing to demand special treatment. 3. **Stay Focused on Quality**: When communicating your request, emphasize your intention to submit quality work. Articulating that you want enough time to produce an assignment you’re proud of can resonate positively with your professor. 4. **Be Specific in Your Request**: Clearly state the amount of additional time you need, whether it's a few hours, a day, or more. This directness not only clarifies your needs but also helps the professor respond more quickly. By integrating these approaches into your request, you position yourself as a considerate and responsible student, which can greatly enhance your chances of receiving approval for an extension.

Granted! As long as it’s reasonable. But I’m Dr. A, the student’s professor 🔥
