Forget Little House and The Waltons – the real king of childhood TV tears was a big, green, perpetually heartbroken monster.
There was one TV show that always made me sad when I watched it.
No, it wasn’t Little House on the Prairie (though that blind episode messed me up).
It wasn’t The Waltons (even though “Goodnight, John-Boy” sounded like a goodbye forever).
It was… The Incredible Hulk. 😩💚
Listen, I loved that show. I was there for the smashing. I wanted to see Lou Ferrigno throw a car, punch a wall, or toss some bad guy across a parking lot. That was the good stuff!
But man… David Banner’s life was just one long heartbreak sandwich.
Every. Single. Week.
🥹 He’d roll into a new town like some shaggy-haired drifter.
👋 Meet some sweet folks. Maybe get a job fixing engines or helping at an animal shelter.
❤️ He’d catch feelings for a nice lady who ran the diner or taught piano.
😡 Then — BAM! Someone would try to rob the place, frame him, or rough up the dog… and you know what happened next:
“You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.”
💥 Cue the ripped shirt. Cue the slow-motion throwdowns.
💔 And just when it looked like he might finally settle down, it was time for him to hit the road again.
Every episode ended the same:
🚶♂️ Him walking alone, thumb out, hitchhiking to that soul-crushing “Lonely Man” piano music.
I was a kid sitting there like:
“Why can’t someone just give this man a hug and a cardigan?!”
It wasn’t just a show — it was therapy with green special effects.
Seriously, just thinking about it now has me all up in my 1980s feels.
