Back in the 70s, you didn’t need Tinder…

Back in the 70s, you didn’t need Tinder, Instagram, or sliding into anyone’s DMs. Nope — all you needed was a mail-order form, a stamp, and the courage to send in a photo of your dream crush. A few weeks later? Boom. Your very own portrait pillow. That’s right, you could literally cuddle up every night with your favorite TV star, rock idol, or that kid from homeroom who didn’t even know you existed.

Now, I know companies still do this today — I even found someone on Etsy who makes them. But back then, this was the height of romance technology. Forget mixtapes — nothing said “true love” like pressing your face against polyester and drooling on a picture of David Cassidy.

If teenage me had one? Oh, man… it probably would’ve been Alyssa Milano from Who’s the Boss? or Kumiko from Karate Kid Part II. (And yes, that’s teenage me talking — not me now, don’t get it twisted.)

So what about you? If you had the chance back then, whose face would’ve been on your pillow?

🎶 Every nap you take, every snore you make, every midnight shake, every wind you break… I’ll be watching you. 🎶

Who would have been on your pillow? #pillowportraits #70s #70saesthetic #genx #everybreathyoutake

... Read moreBack in the 70s, before the digital age transformed romance with apps like Tinder or social media platforms such as Instagram, people found creative and heartfelt ways to express their affection using tangible keepsakes. One fascinating relic from that era is the portrait pillow — a unique mail-order item where fans could send in a photo of their crush, be it a beloved TV star, a rock idol, or even a schoolmate, and receive a custom pillow bearing that image. These portrait pillows embodied a deeply personal form of connection and nostalgia, offering something beyond fleeting digital interactions. They allowed individuals, especially teenagers, to literally cuddle up to the faces they admired most — a daily reminder of admiration and affection that was both comforting and playful. The act of mailing a photo along with a stamp and order form took courage and anticipation, making the reward all the more special. Today, there has been a revival of sorts, with crafters on platforms like Etsy creating modern versions of these nostalgic pillows. This contemporary trend highlights the ongoing appeal of authentic, physical tokens of affection in an increasingly virtual world. It also speaks to the timeless human desire to hold onto meaningful connections in tangible form. Portrait pillows serve as a cultural snapshot, reflecting the 70s aesthetic and social dynamics of romance. The choice of celebrity or crush, such as David Cassidy or Alyssa Milano, often mirrored popular culture's influence on personal desires. This era’s love tokens were heartfelt, albeit quirky, precursors to today's digital expressions and remind us how romance technology evolves over time while maintaining core themes of connection and personal expression. For those who cherish vintage memorabilia or are curious about how past generations navigated love and admiration, embracing or creating a portrait pillow could be a charming and unique way to celebrate that era’s romance tech. It’s an invitation to indulge in nostalgia, remember the innocence of youth, and appreciate the enduring appeal of personalized love tokens. So, whether your dream face was a TV idol or a secret crush, portrait pillows stand as a loving testament to the creative spirit of the 70s, reminding us all that true affection transcends technology — it’s about the heart and the courage to express it, one cuddle at a time.
