the worst things you can do post workout

pushing through your workout is only a teeeeeny sliver of what goes into a full transformation 🤏🏼 what you do outside of the gym can either push you forward or totally stunt your progress

the worst things to do post workout 👇🏼

✨ only focusing on protein — you need BOTH protein + carbs for true protein synthesis. shake with a scoop of protein ? amazing. just add a banana 🍌

✨ scrolling for an hour after — nothing’s worse than sitting down and doing nothing post lift. if you’re gonna scroll, hop on a treadmill and keep blood flowing to help recovery

✨ telling yourself you “earned” a lazy day or dessert — you don’t grow from workouts alone. rest is not a shut down. sugar does nothing to support your hard work, and using dessert as a “reward” is just dumb. you don’t need to earn your food, it’s fuel, not a prize. use rest days for active recovery: walks, mobility, stretching

✨ lifting in the morning, drinking at night — alcohol shuts down protein synthesis. hitting the gym before a big night out doesn’t cancel it out. be intentional

✨ taking cute selfies instead of stretching — if you have 10 mins to pose, you have 10 mins to stretch. stretching = faster recovery + less soreness

train hard. push to failure. follow a progressive overload plan. but be even smarter once you leave the gym 🧠💪🏼🥑✨

... Read moreSo, you've crushed your workout, but the real work isn't over! Beyond the 5 common post-gym mistakes we've already discussed, there are a few other subtle but significant "things you do after the gym that ruin your progress" when it comes to recovery. I've learned these the hard way, and they can seriously set you back if you're not careful. 1. Underestimating the Power of Quality Sleep. We often focus on what we do while awake, but what about when we're asleep? Sleep is when your muscles truly repair, hormones regulate, and your body rebuilds stronger. Think of it as your body's prime time for recovery. If you're consistently getting less than 7-9 hours of quality sleep, you're not giving your body the chance it needs to adapt and grow. I used to think I could power through on 5-6 hours, but my energy levels were low, and my strength gains plateaued. Now, prioritizing sleep is a non-negotiable for me. Try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, create a dark, cool sleep environment, and cut down on screen time before bed. It's a game-changer for avoiding recovery mistakes! 2. Forgetting to Rehydrate Properly. You sweat a lot during a workout, losing essential electrolytes and fluids. While the article touched on nutrition, proper hydration deserves its own spotlight. Simply drinking water isn't always enough, especially after intense sessions. Aim to replenish electrolytes with things like coconut water, a pinch of sea salt in your water, or a quality electrolyte drink. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, reduced performance in your next workout, and even muscle cramps. I used to just grab a small bottle of water and call it a day, but I noticed a huge difference in my energy and how quickly I felt ready for my next session once I started consciously rehydrating with more than just plain water. It’s one of those "recovery mistakes after workouts" that's easy to fix. 3. Ignoring Your Body's Subtle Signals. We're often taught to push through pain, but there's a fine line between challenge and injury. One of the biggest "things you do after the gym that ruin your progress" is ignoring persistent soreness, unusual fatigue, or minor aches. Your body is constantly sending you messages. If you're always feeling drained, unusually sore, or notice a dip in performance even after adequate rest, it might be a sign of overtraining or that you need to adjust your recovery strategy. I used to think "no pain, no gain" applied to everything, but I learned that sometimes, a deload week, an extra rest day, or focusing on mobility work is exactly what my body needed to prevent burnout and injury. Listening to your body is a crucial skill for long-term progress and avoiding common recovery pitfalls. Remember, true transformation happens both inside and outside the gym. By paying attention to these often-overlooked aspects of post-workout recovery, you're not just avoiding mistakes; you're actively optimizing your body's ability to adapt, grow, and get stronger. Keep crushing it, and don't forget to recover smart!
