Replying to @BackNJennaUP oh and the litter box has been moved out of the bedroom now that my cat has started exploring the rest of the apartment!
Living in a basement apartment in NYC poses unique challenges not only for residents but also for their pets. When I first moved into my basement unit, I quickly realized that my cat needed some adjustments to his environment to keep him comfortable and content. One important change was moving the litter box out of the bedroom. Initially, it was convenient to keep it there, but as my cat became more adventurous and started exploring beyond the bedroom, I noticed that having the litter box separated helped maintain a fresher and quieter sleeping area. Exploring space in a basement apartment means dealing with limited natural light and sometimes unconventional layouts like shared stairways or narrow corridors. I found it helpful to create safe zones where my cat could roam without feeling overwhelmed. Using baby gates at the top of the stairs and setting up cozy resting spots in corners with soft bedding made the apartment feel more secure for my pet. Additionally, basements can sometimes be cooler or more humid than other living spaces. I made sure to monitor the temperature and humidity levels closely to ensure my cat’s comfort. Adding a warm blanket near the litter area and regular cleaning routines also helped keep odors in check and the environment pleasant. From my experience, understanding your cat’s behavior and gradually adjusting their environment—not just moving the litter box but also providing stimulating toys and vertical spaces—can greatly enhance their well-being in an urban basement apartment. Sharing these small but impactful changes has helped me create a harmonious living space for both me and my curious cat in the heart of NYC.
