Toxic Positivity on Lemon 8

I've been seeing some posts about toxic Positivity in this app and they example that are used... confuse me. Toxic Positivity is a newer phrase that social commenters have been using so since its newer there's going to be instances of people confusing the definition

From what I know of the topic, toxic Positivity is the pressure to suppress any "negative" feelings and only showing the positive ones. It's forcing people to always see the bright side of things. And it becomes toxic because us humans need to cope with our traumas instead of suppressing them or ignoring them bc then we'll never heal.

I'd read the toxic Positivity posts on here, and the examples they seem to give is just- people being really nice to each other?

Lemon8 has a really supportive community despite all of us being strangers to each other. And the complaint here is that people on here are too nice and it comes off as disingenuous.

And to those I ask what is so toxic about being nice? Sure it could lead down a slippery slope where support turns into enabling bad habits(and tbh I have seen that on here) but also ask yourself " Is this really toxic or am I just a hater" bc I have seen commenters claim toxic Positivity bc no one is having the same negative opinion as them

Girlies, let's remember we're here to have FUN let's not take this so seriously where we feel we have to rain on others parade. And if your definition of fun is being a hater in peoples comments then take your beautiful self to instagram reels lol

... Read moreToxic positivity has emerged as a significant topic in discussions on mental health and social interactions online. This phenomenon encourages individuals to mask their negative feelings to appear optimistic, leading to emotional suppression and unresolved trauma. On platforms like Lemon8, the community’s supportive nature is often misconstrued as disingenuous niceness, raising questions about the true essence of positivity. Critics argue that a constant focus on positivity can alienate those who face genuine struggles, urging a more nuanced understanding of emotional expression. It’s essential to differentiate between healthy encouragement and toxic positivity, which dismisses the validity of negative emotions. Engaging authentically with others means allowing room for genuine feelings, including vulnerability and sadness. Embracing a balance between positivity and authenticity can foster a more supportive environment where sharing experiences leads to healing and connection. Encouraging discussions about emotional well-being, while acknowledging the complexities of human emotions, can enhance relationships both online and offline. Individual well-being should prioritize authenticity over the pressure to conform to purely positive narratives, fostering a community where everyone feels safe to express their true selves.
