GLP-1 Hair Thinning? Let’s Talk About It 🖤✨ | My 4C Hair + Health Journey
So I’m opening up this conversation because I really want to hear from my GLP-1 fam — anyone on Mounjaro, Wegovy, or Ozempic — have you been experiencing hair thinning or hair loss too?
Back in 2024, my Aunt Tracey at @MiraclesByTracey cut my hair, and typically when she cuts it, it grows back fast — like, really fast. But lately, as I’ve been on this GLP-1 medication journey, I noticed something different. When I recently went to @Queenbeehairsalon to shampoo and blow-dry my hair, I realized my hair just hasn’t been growing the same. My strands felt thinner, and that’s when I started to connect the dots.
Of course, I went straight to @chatgpt (as we all do 😂), and found out that GLP-1 medications can sometimes cause hair thinning and shedding. It’s not super common — but it’s happening to me.
For context, I’m a Black woman with 4C hair, and that matters when it comes to finding the right vitamins and oils that actually support our hair type and melanin-rich scalp. I currently don’t take vitamins, but I’m planning to start the ones ChatGPT recommended — Magnesium, Calcium, Fiber, Vitamin B12, Omega-3, Vitamin C, and Biotin — to help strengthen and regrow my hair.
I’m also keeping my hair in protective styles (like these braids 🖤) while I let it heal and regrow. I’ve been thinking about going back natural, keeping it moisturized and tucked away for now until it bounces back.
So this post is really me asking:
💭 Have you noticed any hair loss or thinning while on GLP-1 meds?
💭 What oils, vitamins, or routines have worked for you — especially my Black women with 4C hair?
💭 Any natural remedies that helped your growth journey?
Let’s make this a safe space to talk about the real side effects, the real solutions, and the real experiences we’re having while on this journey — because I know I’m not alone. 🖤

It’s so comforting to know we’re not alone on this GLP-1 journey, especially when unexpected things like hair thinning start popping up! When I first noticed my 4C hair wasn't growing back the same, and literally felt thinner under my fingers, I started to panic. It really makes you question what’s ‘normal hair’ when you see yours changing so much, especially after starting these medications. The OCR results really helped me understand why this might be happening. It turns out that GLP-1 medications, like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, can indeed cause hair loss or hair thinning, but it's often an indirect side effect. The rapid weight loss they cause can put your body in a mild stress state, triggering something called telogen effluvium. This means more hairs enter the 'shedding' phase at once. It’s usually temporary, which is a huge relief! For those of us experiencing this, it's crucial to understand what’s happening and what we can do. While my main concern was thinning, I've heard some people also experience GLP-1 scalp pain or sensitivity. If you’re feeling tenderness, itching, or soreness on your scalp, try to be extra gentle when washing and styling. Using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and moisturizing your scalp with natural oils (like jojoba or argan) can make a big difference. Avoid tight hairstyles that pull on the roots, as this can exacerbate irritation and further stress your follicles. Regarding before and after GLP-1 hair changes, patience is key. My hair didn’t thin overnight, and it won’t bounce back overnight either. I’m focusing on nurturing my scalp and strands. For my beautiful 4C hair sisters, knowing what normal hair under light means for our specific texture is so important. Healthy 4C hair has elasticity, shine, and density. If you’re noticing more scalp visibility, less volume, or a change in texture (feeling finer or more brittle), these are signs to pay attention to. Keep track of your shedding – is it more than usual? Taking photos regularly can also help you monitor progress over time. To support my hair and scalp, I’m looking into the vitamins ChatGPT recommended: Magnesium, Calcium, Fiber, Vitamin B12, Omega-3, Vitamin C, and Biotin. These are known to support overall cellular health and hair growth, but always chat with your doctor before starting any new supplements to ensure they're right for you. Also, protective styles like braids have been a lifesaver for me. They minimize manipulation and give my hair a break, allowing it to rest and recover. Just remember to keep your scalp clean and moisturized underneath your styles, and don't leave them in too long to prevent tension and buildup. This whole journey has taught me to listen to my body and be proactive with my hair health!
