Where to buy herbs and how to store them🌿

Where to buy herbs and how to store them!

I only have a few places not local that I’ve liked so far. I personally like buying in bulk because it allows me to share with friends! So I mainly buy from Mountain Rose Herbs.

How do I know if the herbs are good?

🌿That certified organic seal! That way you know they’re not sprayed with chemicals, it’s better for you and the environment.

🌿 Tightly sealed lids! Air exposure can degrade plant material and poorly sealed containers can let moisture in which can cause mold.

🌿Fresh color, scent, and taste! Look for bright, vivid herbs that smell and taste as they are expected to.

How do I store my herbs?

Glass jars with good tight seals!

Store them in a dark cool place, pantries, closets, cupboards, etc. I have mine in jars on a shelf in a a dark room.

Don’t forget to label them!!! It’s always a good idea to label your herbs and your creations with the herbs just in case you forget what they are/is in them!

If you have any questions let me know! Again thank you so much for being here🌿🫶🏻

... Read moreBeyond just my go-to Mountain Rose Herbs, I’ve discovered a whole world of amazing places to source quality botanicals, and I’m excited to share some of my findings with you. When I’m looking for something specific, or just want to explore unique blends, I often seek out local apothecaries or even metaphysical supply stores. These places often have a curated selection of herbs, tinctures, and blends that you might not find in a larger online retailer. I love the personal touch and the knowledge the staff usually has. It’s a wonderful way to support small businesses in your community. To find them, I usually do a quick online search for "apothecary near me" or "herbalist supply in [my city]," and it often uncovers hidden gems! This is a great way for anyone in places like Lock Haven or Huntsville to find their local herbal resources. For those who are aspiring herb collectors or simply want the freshest possible ingredients, don't overlook your local farmers markets. The vendors there often grow their herbs organically and can tell you exactly when they were harvested. I've even started my own small herb garden, which is incredibly rewarding. There’s nothing quite like harvesting your own calendula or mint! If growing isn't an option, ethical foraging can be a fantastic way to acquire herbs, but always do your research and be absolutely certain of your identification – safety first! Online, beyond Mountain Rose Herbs for bulk herbs, I’ve also explored places like Anima Mundi Apothecary for more specialized or exotic ingredients. The key is to look for reputable suppliers who prioritize organic practices and sustainable sourcing, aligning with the principles of alternative & holistic health service. Now, let's talk more about herbal containers and keeping your precious herbs potent. While glass jars are my absolute favorite, not all are created equal. I always opt for amber or dark-colored glass jars. This is because light, even indirect light, can degrade the medicinal properties and vibrant colors of your herbs over time. If you only have clear jars, make sure they are stored inside a cupboard or pantry where light can't reach them. For herbs that are particularly sensitive to light or moisture, I’ve found that airtight tins can also work well, especially for herbs you use frequently. Labeling is crucial, as I mentioned, but let's go a step further. Instead of just writing "Mint," I make sure to include the date I purchased or harvested the herb, and sometimes even the source. If I'm creating a blend, like my homemade Sleepy Tea, I'll label it with the ingredients and the date it was blended. This helps me track freshness and dosage, ensuring I’m always using the most effective herbs. Keeping herbs in a cool, dry, and dark environment is paramount, but also consider humidity. If you live in a very humid area, adding a food-grade desiccant packet to larger storage containers can help prevent mold, though I usually don't need this step with my tightly sealed jars. Different herbs have different shelf lives; generally, dried leaves and flowers last about 1-2 years, while roots and barks can last 2-3 years. Always trust your senses – if it doesn’t smell or look right, it’s best to discard it. By paying attention to these details, you can ensure your herbs remain vibrant and effective for as long as possible!
