What is Tiktok up to?

As you know, there is a tiktok ban coming. So we are enjoying it while it last, however it seems like tiktok has other plans for preparation for this "ban" that I feel like have been happening for 2 years now. Tiktok has just put out a new app called Whee, and let me tell you, it looks like instagram and Threads had a baby. It is a bit underdeveloped at the moment. So let's see how far tiktok can get with this one. So far, it does seem they had successes with Tiktok and Lemon8. Let's see if bytedance has the same success rates with Whee.

6.30.24 Update: I was not expecting this to blow up like this, it was a random midnight rant😭😭Whee isn’t available in the U.S. I only found out about from a friend on threads, if you really want it you have to find a good VPN or change your app location to where it is available. Last slide are the countries that use it the most so far.

... Read moreSo, like many of you, I've been super curious about Whee, TikTok's new app that's got everyone talking – especially with all the ban rumors swirling around! I dug a bit deeper to understand what this new platform is all about, and honestly, it's pretty interesting. The initial buzz is that it's a casual photo-sharing app designed for your closest friends, kind of like a more intimate Instagram or BeReal, rather than the broad, viral content of TikTok. From what I've seen and heard, Whee is all about authentic, in-the-moment sharing. You post photos, and only your friends can see them and comment. It's a stark contrast to TikTok's algorithm-driven feed. This shift towards a smaller, more private social circle makes sense if ByteDance is trying to diversify its offerings beyond just short-form video. The OCR results show that Whee quietly launched on June 18th in 71 countries, which is a massive global rollout right off the bat, even if it wasn't heavily marketed. It’s fascinating how they chose to launch it without much fanfare – perhaps to test the waters. What really stood out to me from the data (and my own experience trying to get it!) is that Whee isn't being pushed in the U.S. right now. This explains why many of us haven't seen it pop up in our app stores. The download numbers are still relatively modest, with about 13,000 iOS and over 10,000 Android downloads globally, but it's clear ByteDance is targeting specific markets first. Countries like Malaysia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Peru, and Indonesia are leading the pack in iOS downloads. It makes you wonder about their strategy – are they testing different regional preferences before a wider push, or is it a direct response to the regulatory climate in places like the U.S.? For those of us in the U.S. eager to try it, it’s a bit of a workaround. As I mentioned, you'd need a good VPN or to change your app store region. I tried it out by temporarily changing my app store location, and while it's functional, it definitely feels like a brand-new app. The interface is clean and straightforward, focusing purely on photo sharing with a simple camera and chat function. There aren't a ton of filters or editing tools yet, which reinforces the 'authentic' vibe. It truly is like Instagram and Threads had a baby, but one that's still learning to walk! So, what does this all mean for TikTok and its future? Is Whee ByteDance's 'Plan B' for a potential TikTok ban? It certainly feels like a strategic move to secure a foothold in other social media niches. While TikTok itself is a global phenomenon, having a more private, photo-centric app could attract a different user base or serve as an alternative platform for existing TikTok users if the main app faces further restrictions. It's a smart play to diversify, especially when facing such significant geopolitical pressure. Overall, my initial take on Whee is that it has potential, but it's very much a work in progress. It'll be interesting to see how ByteDance develops it over the coming months and if it gains traction in its initial markets. For now, it's a curious glimpse into what TikTok's parent company might be 'up to' beyond its flagship app. Will you be trying to download it?
