Something I completely forgot…
about with a newborn is how sharp their nails are 😅
This was one of the things I didn’t pack for the hospital. But my mom came to the rescue with a nail file!

As a new parent, one surprising detail that caught me off guard was just how sharp a newborn's nails can be. Despite careful preparations, I completely overlooked packing a baby nail file for the hospital stay. In those early days, when your baby is still adjusting and you’re learning the ropes, it’s incredibly difficult to keep their tiny fingers from accidentally scratching their delicate skin. Fortunately, having a baby nail file came as a lifesaver—I borrowed one from a friend which instantly put my mind at ease. The soft metal files or specially designed baby emery boards are gentle enough to smooth down those sharp edges safely without hurting the baby. Using a nail file rather than clipping can feel safer and less daunting for parents who worry about the quick, the sensitive pink area in the nails. From personal experience, I highly recommend including a baby nail file or newborn nail care kit in your hospital bag checklist. It’s a small item but indispensable, as you won’t regret having it on hand. These kits often come with nail clippers, scissors, and a file designed specifically for tiny fingers and toes, offering everything necessary to keep nails safe and neat. Moreover, beyond just keeping your newborn safe from scratches, regular nail care in those first weeks helps maintain hygiene and comfort for your baby. Handling this task gently can also be a calming bonding moment between you and your little one. In summary, packing a baby nail file is one of those overlooked essentials that make the first days and nights much easier for new parents. It’s an affordable, compact, and practical addition that relieves a lot of stress and prevents unwanted injuries, making it an absolute must-have for your hospital bag.
