Hi Dad, working on my 1965 Ford Mustang coupe

2025/1/10 Edited to

... Read moreAs I dive deeper into bringing my 1965 Ford Mustang coupe back to life, I know many of you might be on a similar journey or dreaming of starting one. Restoring a classic car like a '65 Mustang is truly a labor of love, and it's amazing to see the transformation piece by piece. Right now, I'm heavily focused on the bodywork, which is such a critical stage for getting that flawless finish. My current task involves a lot of sanding and applying filler to those body panels. It's not just about slapping some filler on; there's a real art to it! First, I made sure to clean the metal thoroughly and address any minor rust spots – a common adversary for vintage cars. Then comes the initial sanding to create a good surface for the filler to adhere to. I'm using various grits of sandpaper, starting coarser to remove old paint and imperfections, and then moving to finer grits for smoothing. Block sanding is my best friend here – it helps ensure I'm getting a truly flat surface, which is essential for a show-quality paint job later on. The patience required for this step is immense, but the results are worth every hour. When it comes to applying body filler, precision is key. I mix the filler with the hardener exactly according to the instructions – too much or too little hardener can cause issues with curing and adhesion. Wearing gloves is a must, not just for cleanliness but for safety from dust and chemicals. I then spread thin, even coats over the areas that need it, building up layers gradually. Shaping the filler takes patience, using sanding blocks and various tools to match the original lines of the car. It's incredibly satisfying to see those dents and imperfections disappear, leaving behind a smooth canvas. I've found it helpful to step back frequently and look at the panel from different angles to catch any high or low spots that might be missed up close. Proper masking with yellow tape also helps define the work area and protect adjacent parts. One thing I've learned is that having the right supplies makes a huge difference. You can often find everything you need, from high-quality body filler to different types of sandpaper and even safety gear, at your local auto parts store. (Thinking about that O'Reilly sign in the background of my garage, it's a constant reminder that good supplies are always within reach!) Don't skimp on quality; good materials save you headaches down the line. This restoration journey is definitely a marathon, not a sprint. There are days when I feel like I'm making huge progress, and others when it feels like I'm taking two steps back, like discovering hidden rust or a part that's harder to source than expected. But the passion for these iconic cars keeps me going. If you're tackling a similar project, don't get discouraged. Take your time, do your research (online forums and classic car clubs are goldmines!), and enjoy every moment of bringing a piece of automotive history back to its prime. What part of your restoration are you most proud of, or what's the biggest challenge you've faced so far?
