Tips For How To Focus While Studying 📚

2024/8/20 Edited to

... Read moreIt's so true, sometimes it feels impossible to stay focused, especially when you're battling "why can't my brain focus" moments or the dreaded scroll-trap of your phone. Beyond the fantastic initial tips, I've discovered a few more strategies that really help me dive deep into my studies and maintain that laser-like focus, especially when exams loom. First, let’s talk more about music that can increase the spirit of learning. While classical or instrumental beats are often recommended, I’ve personally found that lo-fi hip-hop or ambient soundscapes work wonders. The key for me is finding music without lyrics, as words tend to pull my attention away. It's not just about blocking out external noise; it's about creating a consistent, soothing background that signals to my brain, "Okay, it's study time." Experiment to find what resonates with you! Regarding your study environment, beyond just avoiding your bed and ensuring adequate lighting when studying, consider the overall aesthetics and functionality of your space. My desk isn't just for books; it's my dedicated "focus zone." I make sure it's decluttered before I even sit down because seeing mess immediately sparks distraction. Having all my materials neatly organized means less time searching and more time learning. Good lighting isn't just about preventing eye strain; a well-lit space keeps you more alert than a dim one, preventing that sleepy feeling. Now, about turning off your phone – this one is HUGE. I know it's hard! What I do is put my phone in a different room or use a "focus mode" app that locks me out of social media for a set period. Sometimes, I even tell a family member to hold onto it. Out of sight, out of mind really works. If you absolutely need your phone for a study resource, try setting specific times to check messages, like during a scheduled break, rather than letting notifications constantly interrupt. This helps with "focused studying without phone" for the majority of the session. To really tackle those periods where you feel like you can't focus on study, I swear by the Pomodoro Technique. It’s simple: 25 minutes of intense focus, followed by a 5-minute break. After four "pomodoros," take a longer break (15-30 minutes). This structured approach helps prevent burnout and makes intense study sessions feel more manageable. It's amazing how productive you can be when you know a short break is coming! Another game-changer is setting super clear, small goals for each study session. Instead of vaguely thinking, "I need to study history," I'll write down, "Read Chapter 3, make flashcards for key terms, summarize section 3.2." This clarity gives my brain a target and prevents that overwhelming feeling that often leads to procrastination and a lack of concentration. I also try to tackle the most challenging task first when my brain is freshest. Finally, don't underestimate the power of physical well-being. Staying hydrated by keeping a water bottle nearby and having healthy snacks (like nuts or fruit) can make a big difference in sustaining your energy and mental clarity. Also, remember to sit in the right position so you don't fall asleep and incorporate short stretching breaks. A little movement can re-energize your mind and body, getting rid of that sluggish feeling. By combining these practices, I've found it much easier to achieve deep focus and make my study time truly count.
