This Is What Self-Abandonment Looks Like in Relationships

Most women think the pain came from the wrong man.

But the real damage came from:

👉 how much self-abandonment they normalised

just to keep the relationship alive.

They tolerated more.

Asked for less.

Explained everything.

Carried everything.

And slowly—

👉 they disappeared inside the relationship.

This is why so many high-functioning women overfunction in love.

Not because they are weak.

👉 Because they learned to survive by becoming:

• endlessly understanding

• emotionally self-sufficient

• easy to rely on

• difficult to cherish

And the longer this pattern continues—

👉 the more their standards collapse.

That’s why healing alone is not enough.

👉 You need correction.

📘 Book 3 — The End of Self-Abandonment explains:

👉 why high-functioning women overfunction in relationships

👉 why they ignore their own standards

👉 why they slowly lose themselves trying to be chosen

👉 and how to stop repeating the same painful dynamic

... Read moreIn my experience, self-abandonment in relationships often sneaks in unnoticed, especially for women who pride themselves on being strong and reliable. Like many, I initially believed that heartbreak was simply caused by choosing the wrong partner. However, the deeper issue was how much of myself I was quietly giving up to keep the relationship intact. I found myself tolerating behaviors I previously would’ve rejected, constantly explaining my partner’s faults to family and friends, and carrying emotional burdens alone. The more I overfunctioned—being endlessly understanding, emotionally self-sufficient, and easy to rely on—the more disconnected I became from my true needs and desires. This overfunctioning is a survival mechanism. It feels like strength, but underneath runs a fear of losing love and being left alone. I slowly realized that while I appeared easy to rely on, I had become difficult to cherish because my own boundaries and standards had eroded. Healing isn’t just about self-care rituals or positive affirmations—it requires correction. Identifying where I lost myself and what my behavior silently communicated was crucial. For instance, I learned that asking for less and explaining everything to keep peace was actually signaling self-abandonment. Reflecting on this helped me reset my relationship patterns. Setting clearer boundaries and reclaiming my standards was difficult but transformative. Over time, I attracted partners who valued me genuinely instead of those who took my endless understanding for granted. A practical tip: Keep a journal focusing on moments when you feel you’re giving more than you should. Ask yourself, "What am I silently hoping to avoid?" and "How does this affect my sense of self?" This awareness is the first step to breaking destructive patterns. Remember, self-abandonment is not about weakness—it’s about survival strategies learned over time. You can unlearn them, restore your worth, and build relationships where you are both understood and cherished.

The hard & messy parts of healing

When care starts to look like control
Control and care can look similar: Both come from wanting others to be okay. But they feel very different on the receiving end. Control is rooted in fear: “If I manage how things go, I’ll feel safe.” Care is rooted in trust: “I can show up honestly, even if things feel uncertain.” Learning
