What’s a Mori? Now I Know | Dead by Daylight
Wow, okay, so I just had one of those 'aha!' moments in Dead by Daylight, and I have to share it! You know how sometimes you hear terms thrown around in the community but you're not quite sure what they mean? Well, for me, that was 'Mori.' I’d seen the hashtags, heard it mentioned, but never really got it until it happened to me. And let me tell you, MY FIRST TIME SEEING A KILLER FINISHER was absolutely wild! It completely changed my perspective on certain killer plays. So, for anyone else out there wondering, 'what is a Mori in Dead by Daylight?' or 'what does Mori mean in DBD?', let me break it down from my newfound understanding. Essentially, a Mori (short for Memento Mori, which is Latin for "remember you must die") is a special, often brutal, animation performed by the killer to instantly sacrifice or kill a survivor, bypassing the need to hang them on a hook. It's a killer's special 'finishing move,' and each killer has their own unique, cinematic animation for it. It’s definitely a sight to behold, whether you’re the one doing it or... well, receiving it! Initially, I thought killers could just do this whenever they wanted, which would be terrifying! But thankfully, there are specific conditions and offerings that allow a killer to perform a Mori. The most common way is for a killer to bring a 'Memento Mori' offering into the trial. There are three main types, each with different requirements: Cypress Memento Mori (Green): This is the most restrictive. The killer can only Mori the last survivor remaining in the trial. It’s pretty rare to see this one actually used, as games rarely come down to one survivor left and all others Moried. Ivory Memento Mori (Yellow): This one allows the killer to Mori any survivor who has been hooked at least once and is in the dying state. This means if you’ve been hooked already, downing you again could lead to a swift end without a second trip to the hook. This is the one I see most often and the one that caught me off guard! Ebony Memento Mori (Pink/Red): This is the most powerful. With this offering, the killer can Mori any survivor who is in the dying state, after they've been hooked at least twice. This means a killer can effectively remove multiple survivors from the game much faster. It's a game-changer when an Ebony Mori is in play, and you'll often see survivors playing much more cautiously. Beyond these offerings, some specific killer perks or add-ons can also grant the ability to perform a Mori. For example, The Hag has an add-on that allows her to Mori the last survivor. So it’s not just about the offerings, but they're the primary way most killers get to show off their unique finishers. From a killer's perspective, using a Mori can be incredibly strategic. It saves time by not having to carry a survivor to a hook, especially if hooks are far away or destroyed. It can also be a way to quickly secure a kill against a particularly difficult survivor. And, let's be honest, those animations are super cool, so sometimes it's just for the flair! As a survivor, encountering a Mori can be a bit jarring. One moment you're trying to escape, the next you're being dramatically dispatched. It definitely adds an extra layer of tension and fear to the game, making you think twice about getting hooked even once. Learning about Moris has really deepened my understanding of Dead by Daylight's mechanics and the strategic depth killers can employ. It's not just about hooks; it's about managing health states and understanding killer intentions. So the next time you hear 'Mori' in DBD, you'll know exactly what terrifying, yet fascinating, killer finisher they're talking about!
