Two types of girlies

Navigating friendships can be one of the most rewarding, yet sometimes challenging, aspects of life. It’s a journey of growth, and as I’ve gotten older, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is distinguishing between those who truly uplift me and those who might have ulterior motives. It’s not always black and white, but recognizing the signs can save you a lot of emotional drain. So, how do you really tell the difference? A true FRIEND SUPPORTS YOU IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE. They are genuinely HAPPY FOR YOUR GROWTH WITHOUT ENVY, and they GIVE LOVE WITHOUT CONDITIONS. Think about it: when you share good news, do they light up with you, or is there a subtle shift in their demeanor, perhaps a hint of forced enthusiasm? A genuine friend is your biggest cheerleader, celebrating your successes as if they were their own. They're also there during your struggles, offering a listening ear and practical help without judgment. Their support isn't conditional; it doesn't depend on what you can do for them or how well you're doing compared to them. On the other hand, a FRENEMY APPLAUDS IN PUBLIC BUT COMPETES IN PRIVATE. They often DISAPPEAR WHEN YOU'RE WINNING, and their loyalty seems to be ONLY LOYAL WHEN IT BENEFITS THEM. I’ve personally experienced this. Someone might seem incredibly supportive on the surface, praising you in front of others. But behind closed doors, they might offer backhanded compliments, subtly undermine your efforts, or even spread quiet rumors. When good things happen to you, instead of sharing your joy, they might become distant or try to one-up you. Their presence in your life often feels conditional; they’re around when things are convenient or when they can gain something, whether it’s access to your network, a boost to their own ego, or just someone to complain with. If you find yourself constantly questioning their intentions, or feeling drained after spending time with them, those are big red flags. It’s crucial to trust your gut feeling. Energy truly doesn't lie. If someone's actions consistently don't match their words, or if you feel a sense of unease around them, it’s worth paying attention to. Protecting your circle means being intentional about who you allow into your inner space. It's not about being cynical, but about being discerning. Learning to set boundaries and, if necessary, distance yourself from frenemies is an act of self-care. It opens up space for more authentic and fulfilling relationships where you feel truly seen, valued, and celebrated.
