Like many of you, I used to go with the flow, sometimes to my own detriment. I'd find myself feeling drained, disrespected, or stuck, just because I hadn't clearly defined what I truly needed to thrive. That's why articulating my 3 Non-Negotiables In My Life has been a game-changer. These aren't just arbitrary rules; they're the foundational pillars that support my well-being, allowing me to cultivate more Peace, Self-Respect, and Growth every single day. If you're wondering how to start writing non negotiables for your own life, it’s easier than you think! It all begins with a little self-reflection. Grab a notebook and a pen, and let's explore. 1. Reflect on Your Energy Drains and Fills: Think about situations, people, or activities that consistently leave you feeling exhausted, anxious, or undervalued. These are often clues to what you need to set boundaries around. Conversely, what makes you feel energized, respected, and genuinely happy? These are indicators of what you should prioritize. For instance, if constant negativity from a certain friend leaves you drained, a non-negotiable might be "surrounding myself with positive, uplifting people." 2. Look at Past Experiences: Recall times when you felt truly at peace or incredibly proud of yourself. What were the circumstances? What values were being honored? Similarly, think about moments of regret or when you felt your boundaries were crossed. What could have prevented that feeling? Often, these experiences highlight core needs that, when unmet, cause distress. This is where you realize that STANDARDS AREN'T TOO HIGH, THEY'RE YOUR PROTECTION. 3. Identify Your Core Values: Beyond just peace and self-respect, what are your absolute fundamental values? Is it honesty, integrity, authenticity, personal growth, freedom, or compassion? Your non-negotiables should align directly with these deep-seated values. If honesty is a core value, then a non-negotiable might be "engaging only in transparent and honest communication." 4. Start Small, But Be Specific: You don't need a list of twenty things. Begin with 3-5 truly essential non-negotiables, just like I did with Peace, Self-Respect, and Growth. Make them clear and unambiguous. Instead of "be happy," try "prioritizing activities that bring me joy and calm." Instead of "be respected," try "only engaging in relationships where my voice is heard and valued." 5. Examples to Inspire You (Beyond Mine!): Time for Self-Care: Whether it's 30 minutes of quiet reading, a daily walk, or a weekly spa treatment – this time is sacred. Clear Communication: No guessing games or passive aggression in your interactions. Honesty & Integrity: Both from yourself and those you interact with. Financial Security: Making choices that support your financial well-being. Healthy Boundaries: Saying "no" without guilt when something doesn't serve you. 6. Put Them into Practice & Communicate Them: Once you've defined your non-negotiables, the real work begins: living by them. This often means having difficult conversations, setting boundaries, and sometimes, letting go of things or people that consistently violate them. Remember, these standards are not about being rigid; they are about honoring yourself. They are truly your protection, guiding you towards a life that feels authentic and fulfilling. It's an ongoing process, and your non-negotiables might evolve as you do. But having them clearly defined is a powerful tool for intentional living.
