I used to feel kind of guilty for taking full advantage of my days off… until retail humbled me 😅
After back-to-back freight days, late closes, or guest drama, my brain (and body) needs the reset. Now, I lean into rest days — no alarms, no pressure, just doing what I feel like.
☕ I start with a slow morning and something cozy to drink
📺 I’ll usually catch up on a comfort show or scroll way too long on Lemon8
🎯 Sometimes I walk through Target just to look (no red shirt this time lol)
🛁 If I have extra energy, I’ll do some self-care like skincare or a hot bath
📱And of course, I stay off work group chats because… boundaries 👏
Retail work is go-go-go, and I’ve learned that taking time for myself actually helps me be a better team member. Also — real talk — news spreads fast. Whether you’re out sick or just relaxing, people talk. So now I don’t explain myself. My day off is mine.
📌 Save this if you need the reminder that rest is productive!
... Read moreHaving a day off after a busy schedule, especially in retail jobs like working at Target, can feel like a luxury but is essential for mental and physical health. From personal experience, I’ve learned the importance of intentionally crafting a rest day that truly resets my mind and body.
Starting the day without an alarm clock sets the tone for relaxation. Enjoying a warm, cozy drink—whether coffee, tea, or hot cocoa—creates a comforting ritual that helps gradually transition out of work mode. It’s important to give yourself permission to take it slow and simply savor the moment.
One underrated part of my routine is the casual stroll through Target without any work responsibilities or pressure to buy anything. Just browsing helps me reconnect with the environment in a fun, lighthearted way, especially since retail jobs tend to be fast-paced and demanding. This kind of mindful wandering refreshes my perspective.
Self-care plays a crucial role on days off. Whether it’s following a skincare routine or soaking in a hot bath, dedicating time to care for yourself physically can also boost your mood and reduce stress hormones. These small acts are powerful reminders that rest is productive and vital to wellbeing.
Digital boundaries are just as important. Turning off work group chats and notifications helps reinforce that your time off belongs solely to you, preventing burnout and unnecessary stress. It’s empowering to hold these boundaries and not feel the need to justify your rest.
Overall, days off are not just breaks from work—they are essential recovery periods. Embracing rest days empowers retail workers and anyone with demanding jobs to improve not only their own health but also their work performance and relationships. Rest isn’t laziness; it’s an important part of a balanced and sustainable lifestyle.
Retail work is literally no joke! It is highly stressful in my opinion I’ve worked in retail my whole career until four years ago I had to leave! Sooo I feel this post deeply lol
I feel like people don’t talk enough, about how hard it can be to work at target sometimes especially the super targets 😭
