my book rating scale 🌟

2024/2/16 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, let's get real about one of the most delightfully challenging parts of our reading journey: rating books! I know I'm not alone when I say it can feel like a huge decision, especially when you're trying to be consistent or explain your feelings to others. My own book rating scale has evolved over time, and honestly, creating one that works for you is key to making the whole process less stressful and more genuinely reflective of your reading experience. So, why even bother with a structured rating scale? For me, it's about consistency and clarity. When I look back at my reads, I want to instantly recall why a book earned its stars. It also helps me recommend books more accurately to friends, explaining not just what I read, but how it made me feel. On platforms like Goodreads, where everyone sees your star ratings, having a personal system helps you navigate how those stars translate into your unique opinion. Goodreads itself gives us a 1-5 star system, but what do those stars really mean? Officially, 1 star is "did not like it," 2 stars is "it was okay," 3 stars is "liked it," 4 stars is "really liked it," and 5 stars is "it was amazing." But let's be honest, our personal feelings are far more nuanced than that! This is where your individual rating scale comes in. For example, on my scale, that 1-star 'DID NOT FINISH' (DNF) isn't just about disliking a book; it might mean I couldn't connect with the characters, the plot dragged endlessly, or the writing style just wasn't for me. It's a rare rating for me, because I usually DNF before rating if it's truly not working out. Then, for a 2-star, it's often a book I finished but found disappointing or forgettable. Maybe it had potential, but didn't quite deliver – not bad, but not good either. My 3-star reads are typically solid, enjoyable books. These are the ones that kept me entertained, but perhaps didn't stick with me long-term. You know, like a good, reliable read. Then we jump to 4 stars, which for me often includes those 3.5-star reads that get rounded up like I mentioned earlier. A 4-star book is genuinely great – I might have loved the plot, the characters, or the world-building. These are books I'd happily recommend to others without hesitation. Maybe a book like 'Love Redesigned' or 'Promises and Pomegranates' would fall into this category if they were truly captivating. And finally, the coveted 5 stars! This is where we get into 'MIND BLOWING, AMAZING, SPECTACULAR' territory, as my visual scale from the image describes. A 5-star book is one that I absolutely adored, couldn't stop thinking about, or that left a profound impact on me. It's a book that I'd reread, buy physical copies for everyone I know, and probably rave about for weeks. It usually excels in all areas: plot, characters, writing, emotional depth. A book like 'Powerless' might be a contender for this if it truly blew me away! Developing your own system doesn't have to be complicated. Think about what truly matters to you in a book. Is it character development? The prose? The emotional journey? The plot twists? Once you identify your key criteria, you can assign meaning to each star rating that resonates with your personal reading philosophy. Don't be afraid to adjust it as you read more and your tastes evolve. Ultimately, your rating scale is a tool for you to celebrate and reflect on your unique reading adventures!
