An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 and a depth of 40 km occurred around 1: 40 on Saturday, 25th, with the epicenter off the southeast coast of the Nemuro Peninsula. The mechanism of the earthquake is analyzed as a reverse fault type with a pressure axis in the west-northwest to east-southeast direction.

This year, earthquakes with a magnitude of around 6 have often occurred in the Pacific Ocean side of Hokkaido. Magnitude 6.0 occurred off the southeast coast of the Nemuro Peninsula on June 22 and 19, magnitude 6.1 occurred off the coast of Tokachi on June 2, and magnitude 6.0 occurred off the coast of Kushiro on May 31.

Along the Kuril Trench in Hokkaido, there is a concern about the occurrence of a huge earthquake. Especially off the coast of Nemuro, the government's Earthquake Research and Promotion Headquarters has an 80% probability of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 to 8.5 occurring within 30 years.
