My Ireland travel tips and thoughts
I loved Ireland so much and I can’t wait to go back (especially to Dingle)!!! I’m gonna do Ireland restaurant/pub recs next
From my own experience traveling around Ireland, packing layers really saved me from the unpredictable weather. Even in April, the rain can come out of nowhere, so a good rain jacket was a lifesaver. I also carried some cash along with relying on tap-to-pay since smaller towns and some pubs prefer cash, especially with early closing times outside big cities. Visiting smaller towns like Dingle was by far my favorite part of the trip. The coastal landscape was breathtaking — so rugged and dramatic compared to the cities. We took a sea life boat tour there and the views from the water offered a unique perspective that you can’t get on land. It was peaceful and less crowded than Dublin or Galway, which made slowing down and soaking in the atmosphere really enjoyable. In the cities, I’d recommend spending just a couple of days in Dublin and avoiding the tourist-heavy Temple Bar area. Instead, pubs and streets like Camden Street and Stoneybatter gave a more authentic vibe and better value. Galway was charming but busy; booking restaurants ahead was necessary because spots fill fast. Wander off the main Shop Street to find local pubs and shops, supporting smaller businesses rather than chains. For transportation, renting a car offers great flexibility, especially if you want to explore the west coast and countryside. Be prepared for left-side driving on narrow roads—take it slow and be cautious. If you don’t drive, trains and buses can connect major cities effectively, but plan in advance for cheaper tickets and check for limited automatic rental cars if you prefer them. Offline maps are handy since coverage can be spotty in rural areas. One of the best parts of Ireland is the people—locals were friendly and happy to share their favorite places and tips. Tipping isn’t as customary as in the US but appreciated by servers and bartenders. If you want to enjoy traditional music, try visiting early in the evening before pubs fill and seating becomes scarce. Overall, slowing down and immersing yourself in the culture rather than over-planning activities led to some of my most memorable moments.
