The future is better than the past !!!

... Read moreAs an artist, there's nothing quite as fulfilling as bringing a face to life on paper or canvas. For me, the magic truly happens when I delve into stylized portraits. It's not just about replicating reality; it's about capturing the essence, the emotion, and adding your unique artistic touch. I remember the first time I managed to draw a woman smiling broadly, her eyes crinkling with genuine joy and happiness – that's when I truly fell in love with this art form. So, where do you begin your journey into drawing faces and creating those captivating stylized pieces? Let's dive in! 1. Understanding the Basic Structure (Simplified): Before you can stylize, it helps to understand the fundamentals. Think of the face as a spherical shape to start. Then, imagine a cross guiding the features. The eyes typically sit around the halfway point, the nose between the eyes and chin, and the mouth between the nose and chin. Don't get bogged down in perfect realism; this is just a guide to ensure your features are relatively balanced. I often exaggerate certain proportions slightly to enhance the stylized look – maybe larger eyes for more expression or a slightly elongated jawline for elegance. 2. Capturing Emotion: The Heart of Your Portrait: This is where stylized portraits truly shine! Instead of just drawing features, you're drawing feelings. When I'm aiming for joy and happiness, I focus intently on the eyes and mouth. A broadly smiling mouth isn't just a curve; it involves the cheeks lifting, subtle lines appearing around the eyes, and often a slight tilt of the head. Experiment with eyebrow positions – slightly raised for surprise, downturned for sadness, or relaxed for contentment. Practice observing people around you; notice how their faces change with different emotions. A slight exaggeration here can make your portrait incredibly impactful. 3. Embracing Stylization: Your Artistic Signature: Moving from realistic to an artistic, painted effect is about making deliberate choices. This could mean: Simplification: Reducing complex details to simpler shapes and lines. Think how a cartoonist might simplify a nose or ear. Exaggeration: Highlighting certain features to emphasize emotion or personality. Maybe a character has exceptionally large, dreamy eyes or a strong, angular jawline. Color and Texture: Don't be afraid to use unconventional colors for skin tones or hair, or to incorporate visible brushstrokes (if painting) to give that painted, artistic feel. I often use vibrant, unexpected hues to convey mood. Line Quality: Varying the thickness and darkness of your lines can add dynamic energy to your drawing. A confident, flowing line creates a different feel than a delicate, broken one. 4. Tools and Materials I Recommend: You don't need fancy equipment to start. I often begin with a simple graphite pencil (2B or 4B) and a sketchbook. For digital art, a tablet and a program like Procreate or Photoshop work wonders. Don't underestimate the power of different brushes (digital or traditional) to achieve that artistic, painted effect you're aiming for. Explore watercolors, pastels, or even markers – each medium offers a unique texture and feel that can enhance your stylized approach. 5. Practice and Observation are Key: My biggest piece of advice? Keep drawing! Observe faces in magazines, online, or even people passing by. Pay attention to how light falls on different facial planes and how expressions shift. Don't be afraid to experiment, make mistakes, and develop your own unique style. Every stroke brings you closer to mastering the art of the stylized portrait and creating truly captivating face art.
