Give your Uterus some LOVE 🌸

LOVED my time on gyn onc!!! Some days were short & sweet and some days were just loooooooooong.

No complaints tho, I came to learn and soak up the knowledge. I learned about new diagnoses, how to manage endometrial/cervical/ovarian cancers, and how to treat each disease according to pathology and patient preferences.

I have always enjoyed being in the OR but now I pray I will be able to pursue this career and learn how to contribute to this field as a SURGEON - not just a retractor/cutter/skin-closer lol.

More Diary of an MS4 coming to you very soon!

... Read moreGynecologic oncology is a specialized branch of medicine focusing on cancers of the female reproductive system, including the endometrium, cervix, and ovaries. For medical students like the author, rotations in this field provide invaluable exposure to complex diagnoses and tailored treatment plans influenced by both pathology and patient preferences. Endometrial cancer, often detected early due to symptomatic bleeding, is managed through surgery, radiation, and sometimes chemotherapy. Cervical cancer treatments may involve surgical procedures, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy depending on the stage, while ovarian cancer is notorious for late diagnosis, requiring a combination of aggressive surgery and chemotherapy. In the operating room (OR), the author's enthusiasm reflects a common sentiment among aspiring surgeons—desiring to move beyond assisting roles to becoming primary operators who contribute significantly to patient outcomes. The surgical path in gynecologic oncology is demanding, requiring mastery of complex procedures and interdisciplinary collaboration. Medical students thriving in these rotations benefit from absorbing knowledge about pathology nuances, patient-centered care decisions, and mastering technical skills needed for surgical success. Additionally, understanding the psychosocial impact of these cancers on patients enhances compassionate care. For those interested in a gynecologic oncology career, early hands-on experiences and mentorship are crucial. Staying updated on advances in minimally invasive surgery, targeted therapies, and personalized medicine will shape future treatment landscapes. Ultimately, the integration of clinical knowledge, technical surgical skills, and empathy defines excellence in this field. The author's journey underscores the importance of dedication and continuous learning on the path to becoming a gynecologic oncologic surgeon.
