As someone who has struggled with biochemistry during nursing school and MCAT prep, I found that using mnemonics dramatically improved my retention of complex pathways and concepts. For example, the glycolysis mnemonic "Gross Guys Favor Fat+Butts" helped me recall the order of intermediates, while "He Grabs People's Family Photos" simplified remembering the irreversible steps catalyzed by hexokinase, phosphofructokinase-1, and pyruvate kinase. Beyond mnemonics, I recommend actively drawing out metabolic pathways like the Krebs cycle and labeling each step repeatedly. Connecting the biochemistry concepts to clinical applications, such as how disruptions in these pathways affect patient conditions, made the material more relevant and easier to remember. For instance, understanding the importance of the amino acid pKa values acronyms helps predict protein behavior in different pH environments. In addition, integrating study forums tagged #nursingstudenttips and #mcatstudying offers communal support and resource sharing.
