When it’s actually OK to skip the tip

Tipping used to be about showing appreciation for good service. Now? It feels like everywhere you turn, someone’s flipping around a screen asking for 25 percent even when no service was provided.

I’ve definitely felt the pressure. I once tipped $2 for a bottle of water just because the screen made me feel guilty. But over time, I realized I needed to set boundaries especially if I wanted to stay on track with my financial goals.

Here’s the line I follow now. If someone actually provides a service like a waiter, delivery driver, or hairstylist I tip. No question. But if I’m just grabbing a coffee at the counter or checking myself out at a kiosk, I don’t feel bad skipping it.

Tipping should be about effort, not expectation. And if you’re on a tight budget, it’s okay to prioritize your essentials over automatic tipping prompts. You can still be kind, polite, and grateful without adding 20 percent every time you grab a sandwich.

At the end of the day, tipping is a personal choice. Don’t let social pressure make you feel guilty for protecting your financial well-being.

Swipe to learn when tipping makes sense, and when it’s okay to pass.

... Read moreIn today's society, the etiquette surrounding tipping has evolved significantly. Traditionally, tipping was a method to show appreciation for quality service. However, the rise of automatic prompts for tips, particularly in fast-casual dining, cafes, and self-service situations, can create confusion and unease among consumers. The pressure to tip, even when the service was minimal or nonexistent, can lead to financial strain for many individuals. Consequently, it's important to establish clear criteria for when to tip and when to decline. For instance, tipping is generally expected for services that require personal effort and time, such as waitstaff, delivery drivers, and hairstylists, because they provide a direct service. On the other hand, for situations like grabbing a coffee at a counter or picking up takeout, it’s perfectly reasonable to opt-out of tipping if no direct service is being rendered. This reinforces the idea that tipping should be based on meaningful interaction rather than an automatic expectation. To navigate this landscape efficiently, consider your budget and remind yourself that being polite does not equate to tipping in every circumstance. Standing firm in your tipping philosophy allows you to prioritize your financial health while still expressing gratitude for genuine service. By educating yourself about this topic, you empower yourself to make informed tipping decisions, ensuring that your appreciation aligns with your values and financial capabilities.
