How Much to Contribute to a 401k in Your 20s 💸

If you’re in your 20s, contributing to a 401(k) might feel low on your priority list—especially with rent, student loans, and everything else. But trust me, starting now sets you up in a big way later.

The first rule? Always get the employer match. If your job offers a 4% match, put in 4%. That’s free money. Don’t leave it on the table.

Once you’ve got that down, the goal is to contribute 10–15% of your income if you can swing it. That might sound like a lot, but when you start early, your money has decades to grow through compound interest. Even if you can’t do that much right now, starting with 4–5% and increasing it every year makes a huge difference.

That’s what I did—I started small and raised my contribution every time I got a raise. It’s automatic, so I barely noticed it, but now I’m way ahead of where I thought I’d be.

Your 401(k) is one of the easiest ways to build long-term wealth. Start with what you can, be consistent, and let time do the heavy lifting.

Swipe to learn how to make the most of your 401(k) in your 20s.

... Read moreStarting to contribute to your 401(k) in your 20s is crucial for long-term financial success. One of the first steps is to always take advantage of the employer match. This is free money that can significantly boost your retirement savings. Aim to contribute between 10-15% of your income; even beginning with a smaller percentage, such as 4-5%, is beneficial. Increasing your contributions annually can enhance your savings as your income grows over time. The power of compound interest works best when you start early. Contributions made now will grow exponentially, providing you with a substantial nest egg for retirement. Consistency is key—automate your contributions and adjust them upward with each salary increase to build a secure financial future. Additionally, consider reviewing your investment options within your 401(k) plan. Diversifying your investments can potentially lead to better returns, and regularly re-evaluating your strategy will help you stay on track to meet your financial goals. Together, these strategies will enable you to maximize your retirement contributions effectively.
