A Real Talk on Gratitude

I’ve been wrestling with something lately, and I feel like I need to share it. For weeks now, I’ve been hearing this persistent message: “Stop being ungrateful, live a real life, be grateful, and be happy.” It’s come up in every church lesson, every devotional, and honestly, it’s been an easy conviction to ignore. I’ve spent so much time questioning if it’s really THAT bad... is it really that bad to complain, to check out, to do the bare minimum?

Then today’s Bible study hit me square in the face. Numbers 11—wow.

Numbers 11:1 says, “And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD, and the LORD heard it; and His anger was kindled.” That hit hard. I’ve been complaining about my role as a new mom, feeling overwhelmed, missing my old life, and all of that. But I hadn’t paused to realize that my ungratefulness might actually be angering God. That’s a tough pill to swallow.

I thought about how I react when my preschool students would cry and throw a fit after I’ve already given them exactly what they wanted. Why would I give them more if they’re just going to complain about it? That’s exactly how I think God feels. Why would He bless me with more when I’m sitting here whining about what I already have? Maybe that’s why it feels like my life is at a standstill lately.

Then I read on to Numbers 11:31-33. God hears the Israelites’ complaints about having no meat in the wilderness and he gives them soooo much—TOO much—literally millions of quail. And when they begin to gather it, He sees their lust, their longing for the things they had in Egypt. He sees their disregard for the bountiful manna He’s already given them every day. They wanted more, and He gave them what they wanted. But it was too much, and they suffered for it. The lustful Israelite died. They died because of a plague brought on by the meat. It made me think: Are we so busy wishing for more that we overlook what we already have?

So I’m checking myself. Am I discontent? Complaining? Always wishing for more? It’s time to take a hard look around and recognize the blessings I already have. Let’s work on being grateful for what God has given us and learn to find contentment in that.

What about you? Are you struggling with gratitude too? Let’s talk about it.

... Read moreThat powerful Bible lesson truly opened my eyes, much like the 'My Bible Lesson Today (learning to love life)' message I saw reflected recently. It’s one thing to realize you should be grateful, but it's another to actually practice it consistently. After that impactful realization, I knew I couldn't just stop at acknowledging my ingratitude; I needed a game plan to cultivate genuine gratitude in my everyday life. One of the first and most impactful things I started was a gratitude journal. It sounds simple, right? Just writing down things you're thankful for. But honestly, it's been a game-changer for my life satisfaction and overall happiness. Every evening, I try to jot down at least three things, big or small, that brought me joy or comfort that day. Sometimes it's something profound, like my kids' laughter or a peaceful moment after they're asleep. Other times, it's as simple as a warm cup of coffee, the sun shining through the window, or a quick, encouraging text from a friend. This practice of 'counting your blessings' forces me to actively look for the good, shifting my perspective away from what's lacking. I also discovered the importance of mindfulness and savoring experiences. It's easy to rush through life, especially as a busy mom, without truly appreciating the present moment. Now, I try to pause. When I'm playing with my children, I'll really focus on their expressions, the feel of their little hands, and the sound of their voices. When I'm eating, I try to taste every bite. This isn't just about being present; it's about making a conscious effort to enjoy and absorb the positive emotions tied to these moments. It's about letting that feeling of being thankful truly sink in. For instance, even on days when I feel completely overwhelmed, I'll find myself looking at my open Bible, just like in that image, and remembering the profound lessons I've learned about God's provision. It reminds me that even when things feel tough, there's always something to be grateful for. This mental shift has been incredible in boosting my happiness levels. I’ve noticed I'm less quick to complain and more prone to finding the silver lining. These aren't just abstract concepts; they are practical ways to 'maximize the gratitude' you experience. It's not about ignoring challenges but about acknowledging the good alongside them. It's a journey, and some days are harder than others, but making these small, consistent efforts has profoundly changed my outlook. I’ve found that the more I practice, the more naturally grateful I become, leading to a much higher sense of life satisfaction than I ever thought possible. If you're struggling to find contentment, I truly encourage you to try keeping a gratitude journal or practicing mindfulness. It might just be the key to unlocking a deeper, more abiding sense of happiness and truly learning to love life more deeply, just as it has been for me.
