Been there done that
Crisis units and psych wards are VASTLY different! A crisis unit is a three day stay, voluntarily, a psych ward is a 5150, mandatory 72 hour hold against your will… I’ve done both. #psychpatient
Mental health terminology can often be confusing, especially when distinguishing between crisis intervention settings. Crisis units generally provide short-term care to individuals in need of immediate support, allowing voluntary stays of up to three days. These facilities are designed to stabilize individuals experiencing a crisis, with an emphasis on safety, assessment, and connection to ongoing resources if necessary. In contrast, psychiatric wards often involve legal involuntary commitments, typically referred to as a '5150' hold in California. This means that individuals can be mandated to receive treatment for 72 hours if they pose a risk to themselves or others. Understanding these differences is crucial for those seeking help or supporting someone in need. It’s essential to advocate for mental health awareness and provide accurate information about various care options available. If you or someone you know are navigating challenging mental health circumstances, it’s important to research and understand what services are available. Seeking help can lead to positive changes, and education on these topics fosters better communication and support systems within communities.
