Also look at the brand of pencils your using too. Different brands have softer pencils. A softer pencils blend better. You could also try smudging with your fingers or sometimes a wet brush and they almost work like watercolor pencils. I remember doing one similar to yours when I was in HS and i remember I sooo wanted a white gel pen when I was finished.
