Cutting grass and counting eggs on the homestead

While hubby cuts the grass, I tend to the chickens. By the time he is done mowing 2 of the 3 acres we own, I am typically done doing what needs to be done in the chicken realm.

We are now 6 months into our backyard chicken journey. 20 of our 38 hens are laying. We gathered 13 eggs today. And the 27 roosters are doing what roosters do. Crowing or being outright jerks. 😅

Here’s the breakdown of #todaysclutch including count and egg color:

Cream Legbars (9) - shades of blue

Ameraucana (2) - teal

Silkies (1) - shade of pink to cream

... Read moreManaging a homestead with nearly 40 chickens alongside acreage of land offers a rewarding, yet busy lifestyle. With 20 out of 38 hens laying eggs after six months, it’s clear that consistency and understanding your flock’s needs make all the difference. Each breed, such as the Cream Legbars with their beautiful blue eggs, Ameraucana’s teal-toned eggs, and the Pink to Cream-hued Silkies eggs add not only variety but also joy to daily egg collecting. Roosters, while essential for flock protection and fertilization, can be a handful with their distinctive crowing and boisterous personalities, adding another layer of day-to-day life worth adapting to. Balancing chores like grass cutting on three acres with chicken care demands efficient time management and teamwork—something many small homesteaders can relate to. For those starting their own backyard flocks, learning about breed-specific traits, egg production timelines, and cooperative husbandry can lead to fresher eggs and healthier chickens. Proper pasture or yard maintenance helps reduce pests and create a cleaner environment for birds, contributing to their wellbeing. If you’re curious how many hens are ideal or how to handle numerous roosters, this homesteader’s experience offers insight that can guide decisions on flock size and breed selection. Moreover, the colorful eggs reflect a well-cared-for, thriving chicken flock, inspiring others to start or improve their own homesteading adventures.
