It is the the officially off-season for varsity STUNT!!!
We get 24 practices in our off season so we started our practice the end of September and will practice until mid December.
We practice 3 times a week with 2 lifts on the off days.
So for my off day, I got myself a sweet treat of dunkin’ donuts coffee. Only got a small to keep my sugar intake low.
I really try to focus on getting lots of protein in so I am fully satisfied the rest of the day. Especially since we are heavy weight lifting, I need all the protein I can get.
I am also trying to be in a caloric deficit so I try to eat 3 big meals with high protein snacks.
... Read moreHey everyone! Seeing what I eat in a day is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to fueling as a college athlete. It's a journey, and honestly, figuring out what works best for your body, schedule, and performance can be a real challenge! Based on common questions I get, I wanted to share some more in-depth thoughts on NCAA athlete nutrition and how to create a sustainable meal plan.
First off, let's talk protein. You saw how much I emphasize it, and for good reason! As athletes, especially with heavy lifting sessions, our muscles are constantly repairing and growing. Protein is absolutely essential for that. Aim for a protein source at every meal – think lean chicken, fish like salmon, eggs, Greek yogurt, or even a good quality protein shake like the Fairlife Core Power one I often grab. It keeps you full longer, which is super helpful when you're trying to maintain a caloric deficit or just avoid mindless snacking during long study sessions.
But it's not just about protein! Complex carbohydrates are your energy boosters. Sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and even those roasted potatoes you saw in my lunch are great for fueling intense practices and games. Don't shy away from healthy fats either, found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and the salmon for dinner. They're crucial for hormone production and overall health. And veggies? Load them up! My plate with zucchini, carrots, and peas isn't just for show – they pack vitamins, minerals, and fiber which are vital for recovery and keeping your immune system strong, especially when pushing your body.
One of the biggest struggles for student-athletes is time. That's why meal planning and prep become your best friend. On a Sunday, I often think about what my week looks like. Can I cook a big batch of chicken or ground turkey? Chop up some veggies ahead of time for quick additions to meals? Having grab-and-go options like boiled eggs, fruit, or pre-portioned nuts makes a huge difference. You're less likely to grab something less nutritious when a healthy option is readily available.
Snacks are another key area. Beyond the occasional treat like a small Dunkin' coffee or some chips (because balance!), focus on snacks that serve a purpose. Greek yogurt with berries, apple slices with peanut butter, or even a handful of mixed nuts can bridge the gap between meals, keeping your energy steady and preventing you from getting 'hangry' before practice or class. On my off-days, I still need consistent fuel even if the intensity is lower.
Hydration often gets overlooked, but it's critical. Always have a water bottle with you. Electrolyte drinks can be beneficial during and after intense workouts, but plain water should be your go-to throughout the day. Listen to your body and how much it needs, especially when you're sweating a lot.
Finally, remember that nutrition needs can shift between your off-season and in-season. In the off-season, like now, I might focus more on muscle building and slight caloric adjustments. During the competitive season, the emphasis might shift to maintaining peak energy levels, quick recovery, and sometimes even increasing caloric intake to support higher training volumes. It's about being adaptable and understanding your body's demands for each phase.
Finding your ideal meal plan as a college athlete is a personal journey. Don't be afraid to experiment, track how different foods make you feel, and adjust as needed. Your body is your most important tool, so nourish it well!
