Being wild, September 11th, 2001, the 9/11 memorial/museum

C magazine review

Being and becoming wild have made people look askance at the September 11th, 2001, exhibition at the 9/11 memorial/museum. The immigrant narrative in the exhibition has made Israel Palestine conflicts even more controversial. The photography and videos show immigrants as the primary targets of governmental policies. Thus incentivized people to make works and claims about the Israel Palestine conflicts through graphic images and imageries. It oftentimes challenges people’s views about the immigrants as a potential labour force in today’s economy. Etc.

... Read moreVisiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum goes beyond remembering a tragic event; it opens up complex conversations about identity, politics, and society’s evolving narratives. From my personal experience, the immigrant perspective embedded in the exhibition challenges traditional views, showing how people affected by 9/11 and subsequent policies often face broader geopolitical issues, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict. What struck me most were the powerful visual displays—photographs and videos—that humanize immigrants, portraying them not just as statistics or political subjects, but as individuals caught in the crossfire of policy and prejudice. This approach encourages visitors to rethink widely held assumptions about immigrants' roles, especially regarding labor in modern economies. Moreover, the exhibition’s link to issues like governmental policies targeting immigrants reflects ongoing global debates about security, vulnerability, and inclusion. It makes one consider how historical events continue to ripple into present-day conflicts and social treatment of marginalized groups. The use of graphic images and evocative imageries pushes visitors to engage emotionally and intellectually simultaneously, prompting questions about fairness, justice, and empathy in handling both national tragedies and international disputes. In my reflections, experiencing this exhibition felt like an invitation to understand ‘being and becoming wild’—a metaphor for the unpredictable, sometimes chaotic journey of immigrants and refugees navigating harsh realities shaped by politics and history. It’s clear that art and memorialization can serve as powerful tools to foster dialogue and awareness, making the 9/11 Memorial Museum not only a place of remembrance but also of critical reflection on contemporary issues affecting many communities worldwide.
