Lena was hungry. She took a fig from the market. She ate it slowly. The juice was everywhere. It was on her fingers. It flew everywhere. She licked them. It’s sticky. Venice, Italy was hot. It was June. She just got a notice from the government. It said she needed to move out of her house immediately. She was relentlessly unhappy. It turned out her travel plan was nil.
A year ago, she was on an airplane flying from Toronto, Canada to Venice, Italy to see the art exhibition Venice biennale. Etc.
Objective/synopsis
Lena Chen lived in a house in Venice Italy on a government initiative. She was a tourist from Canada. She was originally from China. She was there to write about exhibitions and Venice biennale on a mission to get herself published by c magazine , etc. . However the five star party in Italy had made her trips a dangerous liasion with powers, money and sex. She started to doubt everything was about looks instead of intelligence. She got on a local government program and tried to explore personal history in Italy. Writing about herself as locals. And other local native people. However the war happened in Iran. The government and people, five star party tried to evict her telling her to go back to where she came from. She was very angry. She attended a party in the market drinking frizzy champagne and eating oysters. She met a boy there and got married. The end. Etc.
Living in Venice as a foreign writer deeply engaged with the art world was both inspiring and challenging for me. Like Lena, I often found myself caught between the beauty of the city’s rich artistic heritage and the complex local political atmosphere. Venice's breathtaking canals and dynamic art exhibitions like the Venice Biennale offer a unique canvas for storytellers and artists to explore cultural interactions. However, when government initiatives intersect with intense political movements, life can become uncertain, as Lena experienced. I recall attending local markets in Venice, similar to those where Lena enjoyed fresh figs and bubbly champagne, feeling the vibrant pulse of the city yet sensing an undercurrent of tension due to political instability. The rise of populist parties, such as Italy’s Five Star Movement, sometimes created an atmosphere where foreigners and even locals were caught up in conflicting loyalties and social pressures. From a personal perspective, documenting such experiences helped me appreciate how art and politics intertwine and how personal narratives illuminate broader societal shifts. Lena’s story highlights the emotional impact of sudden displacement warnings and the anxiety of being told to leave a place that began to feel like home. Navigating visa restrictions, government programs, and local reception demanded resilience and adaptability. Moreover, her encounters with power, money, and social dynamics within art circles mirror many real-life accounts of those trying to make a mark in creative fields while facing systemic barriers.
