Legs, Abs & Cardio
You can get your cardiovascular exercise, glutes and abdominals- with just a hula hoop and a resistance band.
Okay, so I know finding the right workout as a teen can be a bit tricky. You might not have access to a gym, or maybe you just want something fun and easy to do at home. That's exactly why I fell in love with hula hooping and resistance band workouts! Seriously, who knew these two simple things could be so effective? Let's talk about the hula hoop first. It's not just for kids anymore! When I started consistently hula hooping, I noticed a huge difference in my core strength. It's an amazing way to get your cardio in without feeling like you're doing a traditional, boring workout. Plus, it really helps with coordination and balance. I usually put on my favorite playlist and try to hula hoop for 10-15 minutes straight – it flies by! Then there are resistance bands. Oh my goodness, these are game-changers, especially for strengthening your legs and glutes! They're super portable and come in different strengths, so you can start light and work your way up. I love using them for simple moves like squats, lunges, and glute bridges. Just loop the band around your thighs (above the knees) for squats or around your ankles for kickbacks, and you'll feel the burn! They’re fantastic for targeting those muscle groups without needing heavy weights. Here's a quick routine I often do that combines both: Warm-up: 5 minutes of gentle stretching. Cardio Blast: 10-15 minutes of continuous hula hooping. Focus on keeping it going and moving your hips! Legs & Glutes: Resistance Band Squats: 3 sets of 12-15 reps (band above knees). Resistance Band Glute Bridges: 3 sets of 15-20 reps (band above knees). Resistance Band Lateral Walks: 3 sets of 10-12 steps each side (band around ankles or above knees). Calf Raises: 3 sets of 15-20 reps (no band needed, just bodyweight). Core Focus: Plank: Hold for 30-60 seconds, 3 times. Russian Twists (without weight, or holding a small object): 3 sets of 15-20 twists per side. Leg Raises: 3 sets of 15 reps. Cool-down: 5 minutes of stretching. What I love about this style of workout is how adaptable it is. If you're just starting, do fewer reps or shorter hula hoop sessions. As you get stronger, you can increase the time, reps, or use a stronger resistance band. Always listen to your body, stay hydrated, and most importantly, have fun with it! It's all about building healthy habits that you enjoy.
