How I study for OChem! 🧪
These are the methods I use to memorize rxns and reagents!
Other than these methods, I would highly recommend tutoring (if your school has embedded tutors) and going to your Professor’s office hours! I will say re-writing explanations and mechanisms worked for me to memorize them, but it may not work for everyone.
I go to the library a lot, especially when it comes to doing oragnich chemistry homework. I do it with one of my friends and I find it so much more helpful to do it with someone else rather than alone.
I personally study for almost every day of the week leading up to an exam, this may not be effective for people taking a lot of classes! I am taking 2 in person classes and 1 online class, and this has seemed to work especially when it comes to topics I struggled with the most in each lecture!

I'd try to explain each step of a reaction mechanism – like a 1,2-addition, protonation, or elimination – out loud as if I was teaching it to a classmate. If I stumbled, I'd check my notes, then try again. This process solidified my understanding far more than just passive reading. I found that drawing out entire synthesis pathways repeatedly, not just individual reactions, was crucial. Using different colored pens, as you might have seen in my whiteboard photos, really helped differentiate electron flow, leaving groups, or new bonds formed. It's like creating your own visual story for the reaction! Another unsung hero in my OChem journey was leveraging online resources. Beyond my professor's office hours, online tutors like Leah4sci were absolute lifesavers. Watching her break down challenging concepts and then immediately trying to work through similar examples myself made a huge difference. Don't just watch – actively pause, predict, and then compare! And speaking of collaboration, studying with a friend wasn't just for company. We'd actively quiz each other, explain our thought processes, and most importantly, identify where our understanding went wrong. We'd often tackle problems like figuring out kinetic vs. thermodynamic products in HBr addition to alkenes, and having that immediate feedback helped us solidify the concepts much faster than struggling alone. Finally, let's talk about building confidence. Organic chemistry isn't about brute memorization; it's about pattern recognition and understanding underlying principles. My habit of studying almost every day wasn't just about putting in hours; it was about spaced repetition. I'd review older material regularly, even if we were moving onto new topics. Flashcards for reagents and reaction types were essential. A practical tip: before diving into homework, spend 10-15 minutes reviewing the relevant lecture notes.
