In my experience, one of the most eye-opening career realizations is that excelling at a job doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right place for you. Many times, I found myself being the reliable go-to person, trusted and competent, yet feeling unfulfilled and disconnected. The truth is, performing well only shows your capability, not your fit or happiness. It’s common to mistake success for fit, but they measure different things. Success measures output and skills; fit measures alignment with your values, interests, and energy. For example, I once stayed in a role because I was good at it and feared leaving the comfort of proven success. However, the dread of going to work and feeling underused told me something was off. This gap is often hidden by competence—because when you’re good at something, it’s harder to let go, and you may underestimate the costs of staying. Over time, I realized that outgrowing a job can happen even if it looks solid on my résumé. The job might align with what I did before, but not who I am now or where I want to grow. Recognizing this, I started to prioritize fit alongside success by reflecting on daily energy levels, excitement about tasks, and whether the job challenged me in meaningful ways. It helped me make thoughtful career moves rather than staying trapped in roles just because of past achievements. If you find yourself excelling but unfulfilled, consider whether your role fits your current aspirations and well-being. Competence can sometimes cloud our judgment, making us linger in the wrong place longer than we should. Remember, it’s okay to transition away from something you’re good at in pursuit of something that fits better and fuels your growth.
