Build their skills during screen time
1. Ask questions
2. React to what’s on the screen

From my experience as a parent, I’ve found that screen time doesn’t have to be a passive experience for children. Instead, it can become an interactive learning opportunity, especially when parents actively participate in what their children are watching. One key approach is to ask open-ended questions during or after the show to encourage kids to think critically about the content. Questions like "What do you think will happen next?" or "Why do you think the character did that?" not only help engage children but also foster their reasoning and language skills. Another helpful tip is to react out loud to what’s happening on the screen. This simulates a shared experience, making screen time feel more social rather than isolating. For example, commenting on a funny scene or expressing surprise about a plot twist can prompt children to express their own feelings, thereby improving emotional communication. Research supports these practices, showing that parental involvement during screen time is linked with better emotional regulation in children. A recent study from China highlights that kids whose parents were actively involved by discussing and reacting to screen content developed stronger abilities to manage their emotions compared to those who watched alone. An easy way to incorporate this is to have a brief recap session after watching—ask your child what their favorite part was or what they learned from the episode. This reflection helps consolidate learning and encourages verbal expression. Lastly, it’s important to remember that you don’t need to watch every minute with your child; even engaging with them about what they watched on their own can be beneficial. The goal is to transform screen time into quality time that supports learning and emotional growth, rather than feeling guilty or viewing screen time as purely negative. By making these small changes, screen time can become a valuable part of your child’s development journey—helping build skills that extend well beyond the screen.
