When recovering from narcissistic abuse and complex PTSD (CPTSD), it’s common to feel that your experiences or stories don’t resonate with others as you might expect. For example, sharing a funny or meaningful childhood memory might be met with silence or a lack of acknowledgment. This often stems from the emotional disconnection that abuse survivors experience — their trauma creates barriers to fully expressing themselves or feeling validated by others. In my own recovery journey, I found that this disconnect was a sign of deeper wounds from the abuse. It wasn’t just about people not understanding the humor or the story but about the pervasive sense of isolation that trauma instills. One important coping strategy is to seek out communities that specifically understand and validate the impact of narcissistic abuse and CPTSD, such as support groups or online forums tagged #narctok. Sharing within these safe spaces can foster empathy and reduce feelings of alienation. Mindfulness and journaling also helped me explore these emotions privately, allowing me to rebuild trust in my own voice and narrative. It’s crucial to recognize that reactions from friends or acquaintances might not always be reflective of your truth but rather their own limitations in understanding trauma. By gradually opening up in supportive environments and focusing on self-validation, survivors can reclaim the joy and humor in their stories without fear of dismissal. Recovery is an ongoing process where feeling seen and heard becomes a vital milestone towards healing and reconnecting with oneself and others.

They weren’t there, so why do they get a vote? You’re the one who has to experience your life and your nervous system and the aftermath of narcissistic abuse. Not them. Fuck them. #flyingmonkeys #enablers #narctok

Maybe I’m wrong, but if a caveman can figure out: “That hurt me. I won’t do that to someone else.” then empathy isn’t exactly an advanced concept. Yet somehow narcissists still struggle with it. If you’re still trying to understand why they did what they did, my FREE masterclass on how
