EASY GENERAL TSO’S TOFU 🍲

Last night, I made General Tso’s tofu with broccoli and jasmine rice, and it was AMAZING. Wanna know how to make it? Here are the details. If you try it, let me know what you think!

Occasion: Lunch or Dinner

Servings: 2

Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Ingredients:

1 block extra firm tofu

3 cups frozen broccoli florets

2 cups cooked jasmine rice

General Tso’s sauce

1 shallot, sliced

2 tbsp soy sauce

Corn starch

Vegetable oil

Sesame seeds, for garnish

*TOFU PREP*

1. Press tofu in advance to release as much water as possible. I hate the amount of time that takes, so I personally used the microwave method to draw water out of my tofu (place tofu on a plate and microwave twice for 3 minutes, discarding drawn out water each time).

2. Slice tofu lengthwise into 8 pieces and top with soy sauce.

Recipe:

1. Heat vegetable oil (approx. 1 inch deep) in a pan on medium heat.

2. Fry sliced shallots until they begin browning (approx. 5 minutes). Remove and set aside on paper towel.

3. Coat each side of the tofu slices with cornstarch, and fry (in the same oil used for the shallots) for 4 minutes on each side or until they start browning. After all tofu slices are fried, set aside on a paper towel.

4. Dump used oil in a heat-safe jar (I used a glass measuring cup. Be careful!! The oil is extremely hot.) OR use a new pan for the following step.

5. Place fried tofu in empty pan on low heat and add enough General Tso’s sauce to cover the majority of each piece. Add a tablespoon of water and stir/flip tofu so each piece is coated in sauce for about 5 minutes. The sauce will thicken as the water evaporates, allowing it to stick to tofu.

6. In the meantime, in a separate pot or pan, cook broccoli as directed on packaging. (I pan-fried mine with a splash of soy sauce, which took about 8 minutes.)

7. Place cooked jasmine rice on plate and top with fried shallots. Layer tofu and broccoli on the side and garnish with sesame seeds.

Enjoy!
