the weird girl book you NEED to read this summer

another book finished this year and super excited to talk about this one. seriously I have been so lucky that I have absolutely loved all of the books i’ve read lately. like most of the past few books I have ready have been ones I absolutely loved and it’s going to be super hard picking my favorite of the year and my year of rest and relaxation is definitely in that running.

I’ll give a short synopsis of the book so if you plan to read it you can skip this or read it anyway. this book was my first time reading literary fiction and I really liked the change from my usual horror/thriller/scary/weird vibe but this book was just as weird. but lit fic is definitely more person focused and I think even if you read the synopsis its definitely worth checking out anyway. okay so here is is: our unnamed narrator is a wealthy white women living in nyc who recently graduated with an art degree. it is 2000 and decides following the semi recent death of both her parents, she is going to take a full year off from life by taking sleeping/mental health medication so she can essentially sleep for a full year. the book discusses her conversations with her very unprofessional and borderline horrible therapist who prescribes anything and everything, her interactions with her “best friend” who she lowkey hates, her toxic relationship with an on and off boyfriend, and the world going by around her as she strives to do nothing but sleep.

like I said before, I absolutely loved this book and think ottessa moshfegh knows how to write that weird girl literature genre so well. I was a bit nervous at first to even buy this book because I think some of the reviews online were making me uneasy if I would enjoy it. I feel like half of the reviews were they absolutely loved it and the other half were how they hated it but I obviously was part of the former. let me know if you’ve read this and if you liked it or if it’s on your tbr!!

... Read moreOkay, let's dive even deeper into why "My Year of Rest & Relaxation" has resonated so much and truly earned its spot in the "weird girl literature" canon! Beyond the captivating core story, there's so much more to appreciate. First off, let’s talk about that iconic cover. The image of the painting of a woman on the front immediately sets a certain mood – dreamy, slightly melancholic, and definitely intriguing, perfectly mirroring the protagonist's journey. For anyone searching for "my year of rest and relaxation book cover painting," this art isn't just decoration; it's a visual metaphor for the protagonist's desire to withdraw and reshape herself. The aesthetic perfectly aligns with its internal world. When we talk about "weird girl books" or "weird girl literature," we're often looking for narratives that challenge conventional female archetypes. This book delivers that in spades. Our unnamed narrator isn't seeking self-improvement in a traditional sense; she's pursuing an extreme form of self-preservation through sleep. This makes it a perfect recommendation for "books for weird girls" who appreciate complex, flawed, and unconventional female characters existing outside societal expectations. This isn't your typical "chick lit" at all; it's a stark, often darkly humorous literary exploration of grief, detachment, and the absurdities of modern life. Many of you might be looking for "my year of rest and relaxation quotes" or discussions about its "pages." While I won't spoil specific lines, Ottessa Moshfegh's prose is sharp, witty, and often brutally honest. She has a way of crafting sentences that feel both detached and deeply insightful, making you pause and reflect on the narrator's bizarre observations. It's this unique writing style that contributes to what some might call a "reading orgasm"—a truly immersive and thought-provoking experience that leaves a lasting impression. The book also garnered significant attention from critics, with mentions in esteemed publications like the New York Times Book Review and The New Yorker. These positive reviews highlighted its unique narrative and Moshfegh's distinctive voice, adding to its reputation as a significant contemporary work. It's fascinating how a story about doing seemingly nothing can generate so much discussion in a book review context! If you're wondering how to get your hands on this fascinating read, please remember to support authors and publishers through legitimate channels. You can usually find "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" at your local bookstore, borrow it from the library, or purchase it from online retailers as an ebook or audiobook. While some might search for "my year of rest and relaxation free download," accessing it legally ensures you get the full, high-quality experience while supporting the brilliant minds behind such captivating stories. For those eager to explore more in the vein of "weird girl book recs," consider titles that delve into psychological depth, unconventional protagonists, or dark satire. Think along the lines of "Eileen" (also by Moshfegh) for another unsettling character study, or perhaps "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath for a classic exploration of a young woman's mental state. These books, much like "My Year of Rest & Relaxation," offer a rich, often uncomfortable, but ultimately rewarding reading experience. They challenge you to look beyond the surface and engage with characters who defy easy categorization, far from any "book murder bimbo" trope, focusing instead on profound internal journeys. This book truly stands out as a memorable reading experience for me, offering a perspective that's both unsettling and profoundly relatable in its depiction of human ennui and the search for meaning, even when that meaning seems to be found in temporary oblivion.
