Did Clubbing Change or Did We Pick the Wrong Spot

So, back in my twenties, I went clubbing around the US and spent a summer in Australia doing the same. While I haven't gone out in years, I still remember the routine: drinks at 8 or 9, clubbing at 10-11, and dancing until the place closed or hopping to another spot.

Last night, my best friend and I decided to relive those days with a night out at Ava in the North Loop. We got there around 9, and, as expected, it was pretty empty. By 10, the crowd started to roll in. After some drinks in the lounge, we made our way to the dance floor, but something felt off.

It seemed like no one was dancing—except for a few solo girls who were recording short clips of themselves for what I assume was social media. The vibe felt strange, and we were both a bit confused. We ended up finding a corner with a few people who were actually dancing, so we had fun, but it made me wonder—is this the norm now? Did we pick the wrong place, or has the scene changed?

I'm not planning to go clubbing often, but knowing the current norms would be nice! Please be kind in the comments 🫶🏻🙏🏻

... Read moreI totally get what you mean! It's wild how much the club scene seems to have shifted, especially compared to even just a few years ago. I've had similar experiences wondering if I just picked the wrong spot or if 'the new clubbing' really means less actual dancing and more standing around. It definitely makes you question if 'do people still go clubbing' with the same energy they used to. One significant factor I've observed, and it touches on 'the nomovement situation' you mentioned, is the massive influence of social media. It feels like for many, a night out isn't complete without capturing content for TikTok or Instagram. This sometimes shifts the focus from just letting loose on the dance floor to creating the perfect clip. It's a different kind of 'nightclub social dynamics' where performance for an online audience can sometimes overshadow the spontaneous, in-person experience. You see solo girls recording, and it makes you wonder if the goal is to dance or to document. Also, the lines between 'what is a nightclub' and a 'bar' seem a lot blurrier now. Many places that call themselves clubs might actually be more lounge-focused, where people go to socialize, have drinks, and listen to music, rather than hit the dance floor hard. This could explain why you might see fewer people actively dancing—it's not necessarily the primary activity for everyone there. Understanding the 'difference between club and bar' is key to setting your expectations. What 'actual clubbing is' has become a more diverse concept. But 'do people still go clubbing' in the traditional sense? Absolutely! I think it's just become more specialized. If you're looking for that high-energy, dance-all-night vibe, you might need to seek out specific venues known for their EDM or house nights, or perhaps underground scenes. The 'club culture changing' is real, and it means different genres and venues cater to different expectations. For example, some places might prioritize live sets or specific DJ performances, creating an atmosphere where music appreciation is key, but not necessarily intense dancing from everyone. Minneapolis, like many cities, probably has a diverse nightlife. It might be worth exploring different types of venues or checking event listings for specific dance nights. Sometimes, the 'clubbing norms of 2024' mean that the peak dancing energy happens much later, or only at certain themed nights. It's a bit of a treasure hunt to find that perfect spot where everyone is genuinely there to move and enjoy the music, without the pressure of capturing every moment. It's not necessarily about an 'off-night for Minneapolis' but more about evolving expectations and finding your tribe. Don't give up on finding your vibe! There are still plenty of places where the music moves you and people are embracing the moment.

I feel like it was probably just an off night but it depends on the club and area and night. Some places Fridays are the day to go out; other days it’s Saturdays. If it’s a heavy club area then there may have been a better one.
