Or actually...Are we all part of shortening each other's "concentration"?
Now I've read half of "Stolen Focus," and the content is crushing social media, notifications, and platform mechanisms, which very clearly reflect our lives in this age.
Many people should have experienced events like this...When we were doing the most thoughtful and focused work, suddenly a notice came up. We were just going to press in for a moment, but we realized that we had been sucked for half an hour. When we came back to the work screen, the concentration that had been built was scattered. We had to start gathering again.
The book says that this is not a coincidence, but it is the "persuasion strategy" of major tech companies. They designed everything to keep us on their platform as long as possible, because the longer we stayed, the greater the revenue from their advertising.
Interestingly,..We are an unconscious mechanism of this.
When we post something (including when I post this message), many people's phones bounce notifications to pull them in. When someone presses a like or a comment, my phone bounce notifications to pull me back in. We are constantly pulling each other's attention.
When I read it here, I'll review it myself...Actually, I've been off the phone notifications for about a few years, but I still feel that it's not enough to bring our concentration back to a full hundred. The more you read it, the more you feel that or really, we're being manipulated by these systems deeper than you think.
The book questioned that...Imagine, if these platforms knew everything about us, knew history, knew habits, knew what we liked, to biological data, and processed all that information to convince us and distract us in the direction they wanted, how scary it would be.
But looking at what's happening today, it's almost like that.
The algorithm keeps feeding us all the time. Anyone who likes to suck drama, the feed page will only have drama lined up to eat. Anyone who likes to watch cat clips will only see cats.
If you want to know how true it is...Turn to the friend sitting next to you and open the Facebook feed. Scroll at the same time.
You can see that the world on our screen and that of our friends is made differently to capture each person's particular attention.
