Let’s talk birth control - Zafemy Patch

I’m currently on the Zafemy Patch which is a transdermal patch that I replace once every week! My patch is the 150/35 mcg per day of norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol. I personal think this is a safe and acceptable dosage for myself as I’m a 26 year old female! This has been a great birth control for me because I only have to remember to change my patch once a week! I have always had lower levels of estrogen and this patch tends to deliver more estrogen into my body daily than other birth controls. For me this is great, as for others maybe not so much. This specific dosage has also helped me take full control of my hormonal and cystic acne. Although, I do notice if I am late changing my patch that my acne will start coming back and I tend to start getting bad/long lasting migraines. Other than that I’d say this has been working wonders for me and I am not looking to change to dosage anytime soon.

What birth control are you on & what’s the dosage??

... Read moreSince I've shared my personal journey with the Zafemy patch, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into some practical aspects and common questions I often see! Like, how exactly do you apply this patch, and where’s the best spot? For me, applying the Zafemy patch is super straightforward. The instructions usually suggest placing it on a clean, dry area of your abdomen, buttock, or outer upper arm. I personally prefer my lower abdomen, just like it's mentioned in the patient info. It adheres well there and is usually out of the way. The key is to press it firmly for about 10 seconds to make sure it's really stuck on. I also make sure to rotate the placement each week to avoid skin irritation, so I’m not always sticking it in the exact same spot. Definitely avoid placing it on breasts, irritated skin, or anywhere that gets a lot of rubbing from tight clothing. It’s a weekly thing, so finding a good routine for application day helps a lot! One thing that often comes up is the dosage – like my 150/35 mcg per day of norelgestromin and ethinyl estradiol. I've seen questions floating around about 'what dosage is considered too much?' and honestly, that's a conversation best had with your doctor. What works perfectly for one person, like my dosage managing my estrogen levels and acne, might not be suitable for another. Everyone's body is unique, and a healthcare provider can assess your individual needs and medical history to determine the safest and most effective dosage for you. The Zafemy information includes detailed leaflets, and it’s always good to review them and discuss any concerns. Another common concern I hear and see in online groups is 'does Zafemy cause weight gain?' From my personal experience, I haven't noticed any significant weight gain since starting the Zafemy patch. However, it's widely known that hormonal birth control can sometimes affect weight for some individuals due to fluid retention or appetite changes. It really varies from person to person. If you're worried about weight fluctuations or any other side effects like mood changes, breast tenderness, or headaches, it’s always wise to keep a diary and discuss them with your doctor. For me, the benefits of acne control and convenience have far outweighed any minor issues, but everyone's tolerance is different. To help me remember to change my patch weekly, I actually use the reminder stickers that come with the Zafemy packets, and I also set a recurring alarm on my phone. Those migraine days when I'm late changing it are a strong motivator to stay on schedule! It truly makes a difference in maintaining consistent hormone levels and avoiding those pesky side effects. Choosing a patch was a big decision for me, and I appreciate its simplicity compared to other methods I've tried. It’s all about finding what fits your lifestyle best!
