Living with the Burden of PCOS 💭

Good morning everyone,

I am typing this in my bed as I have had to take another day off of work due to this condition.

Yesterday, I could not even be on my phone as the pain was so bad that I passed out twice from it. 1500mg of prescribed naproxen (over the limit) did not even work to get rid of the pain. Multiple large blood clots would continue to come out of me throughout the day as I would scream in pain.

What is PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome):

Well, PCOS is actually an adrenal disorder that is the imbalance of hormones within the female body. This hormonal dysfunction may cause (in my case) painful cyst in the ovaries, irregular periods (14 days late every month lately) , extremely painful and bloody periods with clots, bloating, nausea, severe mood changes (a lot depression/anxiety), hirtuism (extra hair growth). + many more symptoms (I only listed the ones I have)

In a sense, this disorder has ruined my life and there is no cure for it. The worse thing about it is that I’d known I had it since I was 15 but doctors would not listen to me because (cramps are normal). They did not understand the severity of it. PCOS is very under diagnosed and it took me until 2023 to receive a diagnosed because I pushed to get an ultra sound to look for those cysts.

Does anyone else struggle with PCOS? Is there anything that works for you that isn’t birth control? (BC made it worse and made me extremely sick)

... Read moreIt's truly heartbreaking to hear about the struggles with PCOS, and I know so many of us can relate to the pain and frustration of delayed diagnosis and the feeling of being unheard by medical professionals. This condition impacts every aspect of our lives, often silently, and it's important to shine a light on the full spectrum of symptoms we face. Beyond the excruciating pain, painful cysts, and severely irregular periods you described, many of us with polycystic ovarian syndrome grapple with a range of other challenging manifestations of this hormonal imbalance. For instance, the acne isn't just typical breakouts; it's often cystic, persistent, and tends to appear along the jawline, chin, and back, leaving scars and significantly impacting self-confidence. Then there's hirsutism, the excessive hair growth in unexpected places like the face, chest, abdomen, or back, which can feel incredibly isolating and often requires constant management. Conversely, some of us experience frustrating hair loss or thinning on the scalp, adding another layer of distress to our appearance. The battle with weight gain or difficulty losing weight seems like a constant uphill struggle for many with PCOS, often feeling like an impossible feat despite diligent diet and exercise efforts. And let's not forget the infamous PCOS belly or recurrent bloating, which can make you look and feel significantly distended, sometimes for weeks at a time. This isn't just a physical discomfort; it deeply impacts body image and how we dress and move. Infographics often highlight this visual difference, comparing a "normal stomach" to a "PCOS stomach." The hormonal fluctuations and chronic inflammation associated with PCOS also take a significant toll on our mental well-being. Mood changes, including heightened anxiety, depression, and irritability, are incredibly common. It's not "just in your head"; it's a real consequence of the condition, leading to what some describe as significant psychological stress. Chronic fatigue is another pervasive symptom, making daily tasks feel monumental, even after a full night's sleep. Many of us also contend with persistent pelvic pain, which can range from dull aches to sharp, debilitating cramps, often unrelated to our menstrual cycle. For those hoping to start a family, trouble conceiving or infertility is a heartbreaking reality, as the hormonal imbalance often leads to anovulation or unpredictable periods. The underlying mechanism of insulin resistance fuels many of these issues, affecting everything from energy levels to skin health and metabolic function. Learning about these various ways PCOS affects the body, as illustrated in many detailed infographics, helps validate our experiences. Understanding these myriad symptoms – from the physical pain and irregular periods to the emotional burden and sleep problems – is the first crucial step toward managing this complex syndrome. It's a journey of advocacy, self-care, and often, finding a supportive community. Remember, you are not alone in navigating this life with PCOS. Keep pushing for answers and seeking solutions that truly improve your quality of life.

A word of advice - if your doc is not believing you, request what is called a trans vaginal ultrasound. This is what I did because they did not believe me due to the bloodwork & because I was “small”. They assumed I was healthy. And with my diagnoses the only thing they told me was to “not gain weight”..
